The Core Ultra line marks the biggest architectural change in Intel's 40 years of chipmaking.

The launch of Intel Core Ultra demonstrates the unprecedented scale and speed at which Intel is delivering AI to PCs. By 2028, AI computers are projected to account for 80% of the PC market. Together with its vast ecosystem of hardware and software partners, Intel is best positioned to dominate this next generation of computing.

Intel Core Ultra is manufactured using Intel's 4nm process technology (formerly known as 7nm) and Foveros 3D packaging. According to Intel, the Core Ultra line marks the biggest architectural change in 40 years of chip manufacturing. The P core architecture has been redesigned to deliver better performance with improved instructions per clock (IPC) and the new E core allows for improved energy efficiency.

Intel boasts that the new Core Ultra chips offer up to 79 percent lower power consumption at the same 28W power draw compared to AMD's Ryzen 7 7840U when idle on a Windows PC. Customers can also expect improvements in other areas, such as 48 percent better power efficiency when streaming Netflix, 44 percent when playing local 4K video, or 7 percent when browsing the web.

Core Ultra specifications posted

The lineup offers up to 16 cores/22 threads at speeds up to 5.1 GHz, with support for up to 64 GB of LPDDR5x RAM or up to 96 GB of DDR5. Like Intel's other new-generation CPUs, the Core Ultra lineup supports Wi-Fi 6E and discrete Wi-Fi 7, Thunderbolt 5, and Bluetooth 5.4 with LE Audio.

Intel also improved the integrated graphics, featuring up to 8 Xe cores, DX12 Ultimate support, and XeSS. The company claims customers can expect up to twice the graphics performance compared to previous-generation CPUs with iGPUs. Other features include ray tracing, AV1 encode/decode, and HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.1 support.

Finally, Intel is focusing heavily on AI and a new NPU called Intel AI Boost, which promises to accelerate AI processing with up to 2.5 times better performance. This will be very useful for the next generation of Windows that Microsoft is expected to launch in the second half of 2024.

The Intel Core Ultra H-Series and U-Series are available today. The Intel Core Ultra 9 185H with a 45W TDP will be available in Q1 2024, along with ultra-low-power 9W models. Intel says its partners have prepared more than 230 PC designs based on the new generation processors.
