The decision of the Slovak government was made based on the recommendations of the Slovak Government Council on human rights, minorities and gender equality, and the expert opinion of the Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
According to the announcement on June 7, the Vietnamese community meets all the criteria in terms of quantity, has lived in Slovakia for nearly 70 years and the third generation has fully integrated into society.

With the above decision, the Vietnamese community will have representatives at the Committee for National Minorities and Ethnic Groups of the Government Council of the Slovak Republic on human rights, national minorities and gender equality.
The Vietnamese community will be supported by financial resources from the Ethnic Minority Cultural Support Fund and have the right to participate in giving opinions related to this fund.
There are currently about 7,000 Vietnamese living and studying in Slovakia. The country of 5.5 million people last recognized a community as an ethnic minority 13 years ago (2010 for the Serbian community).
Vietnamese Ambassador to Slovakia Nguyen Tuan happily said that this was a very long procedural journey with great efforts from the Vietnamese community here. The Vietnamese Association in Slovakia assessed that this event brought more benefits to the Vietnamese community, helping to build a stronger community.
More than 10 years ago, on July 3, 2013, the Czech Republic government also recognized the Vietnamese community here as an ethnic minority of this country.
