The Global AI Principles aim to ensure publishers' continued ability to create and disseminate quality content, while facilitating innovation and responsible development of trustworthy AI systems.

Addressing key aspects related to intellectual property, transparency, accountability, quality and integrity, fairness, safety, legacy and sustainability, the Global Principles on AI mark an unprecedented collaboration to protect the interests of content creators, publishers and consumers alike.

In the Principles, the organizations call for responsible development and deployment of AI systems and applications, stating that these new tools should only be developed in accordance with established principles and laws to protect intellectual property, brands, consumer relationships, and publisher investments.

The principle clearly states that: “The indiscriminate misappropriation of our intellectual property is unethical, harmful, and violates our protected rights.”

“These Global AI Principles represent a broad consensus among publishers around the world that their intellectual property, the product of the significant investments they have made in providing quality journalism and creative content, must be recognized and respected,” said Danielle Coffey, President and CEO of the News/Media Alliance.

“AI systems are only as good as the content they create…, so it is imperative that developers of generative AI recognize and compensate their respective publishers for the enormous value their content contributes to the development of these systems,” the statement added.

“The guiding principle” in the field of AI

“For decades, our member companies have pursued the opportunity to bring trusted news and entertainment to new platforms and distribution channels enabled by the internet,” said Jason Kint, CEO of Digital Content Next. “We know from experience that principles like these are necessary to ensure those opportunities continue to flourish and serve as a guide for businesses and policymakers grappling with the ethical and legal questions surrounding AI.”

“The Global AI Principles pave the way for a strong convergence between innovation and the ethical development of AI,” said Angela Mills Wade, CEO of the European Publishers Council. “We invite regulators to establish regulatory frameworks that foster innovation and create new business opportunities, while ensuring that AI develops in a responsible and sustainable way for the publishing and journalism sectors, with full respect for their intellectual property rights.”

Among other things, the Global AI Principles stipulate that developers, operators and deployers of AI systems should:

Respect intellectual property rights to protect organizations' investment in creating original content.

Leverage efficient licensing models to help create high-quality and trustworthy AI systems.

Provide granular transparency to enable publishers to exercise their rights when their content is included in AI training datasets.

Clearly attribute content to publishers who originally created the content.

Recognize the invaluable role publishers play in creating high-quality content for AI training, as well as for display and aggregation.

Comply with competition laws and principles, and ensure that AI models are not used for anti-competitive purposes.

Promote trustworthy sources of information, while ensuring that AI-generated content is accurate and complete.

Do not distort the original work.

Respect users' privacy and fully disclose the use of their personal data in the design, training, and use of AI systems.

Aligned with human values and operating within global laws.
