Historically, Sam Son was the first place to welcome ships arriving at Hoi port with tens of thousands of compatriots, cadres, soldiers and students from the South gathering to the North following the humane and correct policy of the Party and Uncle Ho. Today, 70 years after that historic event, a memorial site for compatriots, cadres, soldiers and students from the South gathering to the North was built on the beautiful coastal land of Sam Son, the highlight being the image of the ship gathering to the North.

The autumn afternoon returns to the sea, to the sound of waves hitting the shore as if the sea has been singing the same song of loyalty and affection for thousands of years. Cheering with the October wind is the red flag with yellow star fluttering on the bow of the ship gathering in the memorial area of compatriots, cadres, soldiers and students from the South gathering in the North. The memorial area has just been completed but its historical origin has gone through a journey of 70 years.
70 years have passed since that historic troop transfer, but the memories and recollections of the enthusiasm, hospitality, and thoughtful reception of the land and people of Sam Son are still deeply imprinted in the hearts of the cadres, soldiers, and students from the South who were present on the ships that docked at the port at that time. Despite the ups and downs of time and the vicissitudes of life, the sacred sentiment always urges and invites people to return to visit the old place. Each return is an unforgettable emotion. During those returns, former cadres, soldiers, and students from the South who gathered in the North still expressed their desire to build in the coastal city of Sam Son a symbolic work, marking an important and meaningful historical event; at the same time, it is a place to connect generations, educate traditions, and promote the spirit of great solidarity - the source of strength, a great and lasting motivation in the cause of building and defending the homeland and country.
Deeply aware of the value and significance of this historical event; in response to the expectations and sentiments of the cadres, soldiers and students in the South, in 2014, the Thanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee and People's Committee agreed to assign Sam Son City to arrange land funds to build a memorial project for the Southern compatriots, cadres, soldiers and students who gathered in the North. After a period of preparation, the project was approved by the Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee in October 2014, and the investment policy was approved in June 2015. In September 2020, the Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Council issued a Resolution on the construction of the project. In August 2022, the memorial site was started construction at a location right next to Lach Hoi port, Quang Tien ward, Sam Son city.
The project investment scale includes two areas. Area A has an area of 13,580m2 , including the following items: monument of the ship gathering to the North, exhibition house, reception, combined with documentary film screening; large relief in the shape of a bow and auxiliary works. Area B has an area of 1,985m2 , including three camps, landscape trees and auxiliary works, simulating the accommodation and living places of compatriots, cadres, soldiers and students in the South. In addition, there is the Memory Road with a length of 1.1km, a branch line of Nam Song Ma Avenue to area B with a length of 665m, a thematic park with an area of 23,865m2 ...
The monument of the ship gathering to the North, located in subdivision A of the project, is considered a valuable highlight in terms of both artistic and emotional sense. According to the design, the ship is made of reinforced concrete, with a surface area of 3,200m2 with the highest point being the bow, 12m high. At the foot of the ship are designed large stone blocks, sculpted in the shape of rolling waves hitting the ship's hull. Inside the ship's hull are designed stairs up and down. The area inside the monument will be arranged as a miniature museum displaying artifacts and simulating the interior of ships from Poland and the former Soviet Union. The deck is equipped with a railing system for visitors and locals to stand and visit, sightsee...
The statue recreates the event of welcoming compatriots, cadres, soldiers and students from the South to the North.
Walking around the memorial area is like entering a "journey of memories", a "journey of emotions".
The delicate, realistic and vivid carvings on the reliefs; the large statues carved from stone have recreated many dear and touching memories of solidarity, sharing and mutual support between the people of the two regions, the South and the North, between the cadres, soldiers and students of the South and the army and people of Sam Son in particular, Thanh Hoa in general, during the turbulent moments of history. People linked hands, shook hands and greeted each other as if they had known each other since the hundred eggs of Mother Au Co, as if there had never been a boundary line. Leaving is also returning, returning into the arms of great solidarity. The people, cadres, soldiers and students, following the Party and State's policy, accept to temporarily leave their birthplace, their family, relatives and friends, then the land and people of Sam Son, the heroic and resilient land of Thanh Hoa, will be their relatives, their home, their "second homeland" ready to welcome, care for and protect them.
The assembly ship stands tall and proud in the sun and wind. The interesting thing is that no matter which direction you look, you feel like the ship is moving and reaching out. The ship is a historical symbol; at the same time, it is a driving force for the future. In the middle of the ship, there is a space displaying documents and artifacts related to the assembly event that year. Many of these documents and artifacts were respectfully sent back by compatriots, cadres, soldiers and students from the South.
Mr. Huynh Van Thon, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Loc Troi Group, Hero of Labor in the Renovation Period, Deputy Head of the Central Southern Student Liaison Committee, had a sincere confession: “... Every contribution from each person in the Southern student community in the North, whether it is material or a letter, a report card, a photo or an old scarf preserved throughout the journey from the 1954 regrouping to the present, can be an artifact of the regrouping museum, all are emotional ties connecting the present with our memorable and proud past. The greatest value of each artifact is our intellectual and emotional commitment to the tradition of patriotism and love for our people, which we are sure that each of us wants to preserve and pass on to future generations” (“Southern Student Stories - I Follow the Regrouping Army”, Scientific Conference “Thanh Hoa with Southern compatriots, cadres, soldiers and students regrouping to the North - 70 years of deep affection”).
Then, the memorial site for compatriots, cadres, soldiers and students from the South who gathered in the North will truly become an attractive destination for people in the country, international friends, a red address to educate revolutionary traditions and patriotism for generations of Vietnamese when coming to the beautiful coastal city of Sam Son, to the land of Thanh Hoa, brave, resilient, rich in revolutionary traditions, deep in cultural layers...
