Ms. Mai talks with the students, Ha Thao sits on the far right.
Ha Thao is a 9th grade student, in the physics team of Vo Thanh Trang Secondary School, Tan Phu District, Ho Chi Minh City. The teacher she respects and loves very much, the one who gave her the bunch of grapes whose stems she still keeps as a souvenir, is Ms. Hoang Thi Thanh Mai, the school's Vice Principal.
Strict but not distant; While working, she is very serious, but when participating in extracurricular activities and movements with students, Ms. Mai is always enthusiastic, dedicated and extremely youthful with her students. The teacher is loved by many students and has just received a certificate of merit from the Prime Minister for her outstanding achievements in the 2022-2023 school year.
Reform naughty students
As a literature teacher, Ms. Hoang Thi Thanh Mai has worked for 10 years at Dong Khoi Secondary School, Tan Phu District, and was then appointed Vice Principal of Hung Vuong Secondary School. Ms. Mai has continued to be Vice Principal of Vo Thanh Trang Secondary School from 2015 to present.
From a teacher who worked as a homeroom teacher for many years and later moved to management, Ms. Mai always hopes to be a relative and friend to many students, especially the hyperactive students who sometimes make mistakes but always know how to correct them.
Ms. Mai recalled the time she helped a student who was spoiled, addicted to games, and very hyperactive change greatly. The 7th grader named T. that year was very intelligent but was spoiled so he was lazy to study, often mischievous, and teased his classmates, causing his teachers to often complain. After many reminders without progress, Ms. Mai strictly forced the parents and student to commit to cooperating with the school in monitoring the student's study and discipline through each daily class. If he did not change, he would have to move to another learning environment.
Knowing that he was facing the risk of leaving his school, class, and friends, the student changed completely. He improved in his studies and brought his weekly assignments to his teachers for review. From a weak student in the first semester, by the end of the year he had become an average student and was much more disciplined.
The teacher is loved by many generations of students because of her fair rewards and punishments.
Many other hyperactive students have also been trained by Ms. Mai. Ms. Mai said that each student has their own circumstances and their own story. Teaching stubborn students is an extremely difficult task, requiring teachers to combine many factors: psychology, fairness, altruism, understanding the circumstances and personality of each student... to choose the appropriate way to handle the situation.
Coming to Vo Thanh Trang Secondary School, we listened to the students' stories full of love and affection about their teacher.
Ha Thao told Thanh Nien Newspaper reporter: "In 7th grade, I won the "Good Literature" award at the city level. Ms. Mai and the teachers of the literature group organized for me and the other students of the literature team to have lunch together. I still remember one time during recess, Ms. Mai gave me some fruit to eat to cool down, then she gave me more to share with my friends. Among them was a bunch of grapes, I still keep the stem of it until now. Because it was a simple gift but to me it was full of meaning that the teacher gave it."
In Ha Thao's mind, when standing on the podium or under the flag during the flag salute at the beginning of the week, Ms. Mai is very serious, but normally, in many other activities, she always cares about her students. She encourages this student to eat more, not to be too focused on studying and neglect eating, she reminds that student to try to pay attention to eating, get enough rest, and not let it affect their health.
To understand and help students improve in their studies and sense of discipline, Ms. Mai always observes, talks, understands the psychology and personality of the students, and at the same time knows the educational environment in each student's family. When students make progress, even small ones, the teacher promptly takes note, gives words of encouragement, and small gifts to motivate their efforts.
Meanwhile, talking about herself, Ms. Mai modestly said: "The greatest achievement of a teacher like me is not only the good lessons conveyed to the students, but through the teaching process, together we can influence naughty students with a strict yet understanding and tolerant heart."

Looking at students to motivate myself to be more creative
Ms. Mai confided that the generation of students is increasingly intelligent, dynamic, creative, and proactive in acquiring knowledge. Many students are very confident in debating. This urges teachers to always learn by themselves and improve their professional skills. That is also the motivation for the teacher born in 1977 to make many efforts in management work and have many initiatives and experiences recognized by the People's Committee of Tan Phu District. A typical example is the initiative to manage activities to innovate teaching methods for literature at secondary school level.
Not only is she good at her professional work, since becoming a manager at Vo Thanh Trang School, Ms. Mai has also participated in many activities of the Women's Union of Tan Quy Ward. Knowing about the program to donate Ao Dai to disadvantaged women in Long An - a border area close to Cambodia, Ms. Mai mobilized many teachers in the school to participate. In total, nearly 100 beautiful Ao Dai sets were sent to the border area by the teachers of this school.
The literature teacher wants to be a relative and friend of the students.

Or to help more disadvantaged students so that they can go to school with peace of mind, she has connected with benefactors, bringing the "La Nu 1&1" scholarship to students. The scholarship helps students fulfill both their right and duty to study, while also training their personality, nurturing their dreams and ambitions.
Ms. Tran Thi Huyen Trang, Vice President of the Women's Union of Tan Quy Ward, Tan Phu District, Ho Chi Minh City shared: "Ms. Mai is a teacher who always shows her heart and soul in all her work. She always shows a sense of responsibility, loves her job, loves her students, and is enthusiastic about her work. She is also an active member of the Women's Union of the ward, always responding, connecting, and spreading the activities and movements of the union, so that the programs reach a large number of students, teachers, and staff in the school."
During many years of study, Ms. Hoang Thi Thanh Mai was a grassroots emulation fighter, and one year she achieved the title of city-level emulation fighter.
In the 2011-2012 school year, Ms. Mai received the Ho Chi Minh City badge. Since 2012, she has received many certificates of merit from the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee for excellent performance for 2 consecutive years. In the 2022-2023 school year, she received a certificate of merit from the Prime Minister for her outstanding achievements.
Some of Ms. Mai's initiatives were recognized by the People's Committee of Tan Phu District: Solutions to improve the quality of professional group activities; managing innovative activities in teaching literature in secondary schools in Tan Phu District; solutions to educate patriotism, ethics, lifestyle, and cultural values for students through innovative flag-raising activities at the beginning of the week.
Or Ms. Mai's initiative on measures to organize and implement school counseling at the secondary school level is also noteworthy. Thanks to that, students are bold and no longer shy when sharing their thoughts with teachers and parents, thereby helping them overcome difficulties, creating a more friendly and positive school environment...
