The salary structure of the medical industry is like other industries, which is unreasonable.

Dr. Nguyen Huu Tung, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Phan Chau Trinh University, Permanent Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Private Healthcare Association, commented that the medical profession, especially doctors, is a complicated job, so if the salary structure for the medical profession is like other professions, it would be unreasonable.

Doctor Tung analyzed: "The medical profession is related to human health and life, and the job is very risky. Doctors have to study twice as long as others when they go to school, and tuition fees are getting higher and higher due to the high cost of training this profession, the need for infrastructure, practice hospitals, simulation centers, etc. After graduating, they are exposed to a disease environment, have to work at night regularly, and are under pressure to treat patients, etc. The medical profession and the medical industry in general need to be paid a commensurate salary. However, our country's salary structure is wrong due to a wrong perception of the nature of labor, so the salary coefficient of new graduates is too low, equal to that of ordinary workers."

According to Dr. Tung, in the US, tuition for medical students is about 70,000 - 80,000 USD/year (equivalent to 1.8 - 2 billion VND/year), however, the salary of a resident doctor is 100,000 - 150,000 USD/year (equivalent to 2.5 - 3.7 billion VND/year). Meanwhile, in Vietnam, the lowest tuition for medical students is 30 million VND/year, the highest is 180 million VND/year, but when graduating and working, the initial basic salary at public health facilities is only about 42 million VND/year. Allowances or extra night shift pay are not much either.

Doctor Vo Van Tien, former Director of Nguyen Trai Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, also affirmed that medical work is a complicated profession due to its hard and even toxic nature, long and difficult training time, and high costs. The government should have a different way of calculating salaries compared to most other professions. "When the mind has to worry a lot about income, it will not be possible to fully devote oneself to the profession," Doctor Tien commented.

Another consequence, according to Dr. Nguyen Huu Tung, is: "Because salaries are too low, many doctors want to increase their income by forcing patients, prescribing the wrong medicine or other negative ways that are extremely dangerous to life."

Doctor Huynh Le Thai Bao (working at a university in Da Nang City) expressed his opinion: "To become a doctor, one must go through many difficulties and hardships from studying to graduating and treating patients. Not to mention there are very dangerous situations such as being assaulted by patients' relatives. Therefore, I hope there will be changes in salary, benefits and allowances for those working in the medical industry, so that they have an income commensurate with their contributions."

"Every industry is hard and wants to have a good salary, but the medical industry is different, so I hope the government will pay more attention to the income of the medical industry. Doctors and nurses must have enough to live on before they can have the heart and strength to treat others," Dr. Tien shared.
