The collaboration between Cat Tien Sa and JTBC cost 5 million USD. I now have the script in my hands and I am extremely satisfied with it. It is completely worth the 5 million USD we spent.
To get the right quality
When I joined hands with JTBC to produce the program, I realized many things. When the Korean crew came to Vietnam to film the program "Paradise Island", according to the original plan, in addition to the Korean crew, there was a Vietnamese crew consisting of the best people today. I wanted my program to be of high quality, so I recruited the best and most famous people to support me.
During the field survey, both the Vietnamese and Korean crews went. When they arrived at the main location, the Korean crew spread out everywhere. Each person had a job, they observed, measured the dimensions, simulated the space and came up with ideas right during the survey. Each person did their work in silence. After that survey time, the Korean crew came up with sketches that most closely matched the program's filming format.

Meanwhile, the Vietnamese crew did not gain anything after the survey. When sitting down to discuss together, the Vietnamese crew also took more time to remember what they had seen. After 15 days of filming, the Korean crew gave me a huge amount of content that I estimated could be used to produce 30 episodes. Each director and DOP had assistants who were so skilled that when the DOP changed the camera distance, the assistants immediately "set" the camera, spending only about 30 minutes to 1 hour to get the quality to the required standards.
But with this job, the Vietnamese crew sometimes took a whole day to do. When setting up the sound and hidden cameras in the room, it took the Korean studio staff 2 hours to complete. When I asked my Vietnamese staff to check (a very famous and skilled person), the answer I received was "I probably can't get the job because I don't know how the Koreans hid the cameras, by what means or where".
While the Korean crew’s working day starts from dawn until 2-3am, they never complain at all. Meanwhile, I often hear complaints from my Vietnamese friends about being “tired, weak, hungry, unable to eat…” Not to mention, while the Koreans are busy working, the Vietnamese sit in one place and absentmindedly look around.
Telling this story to affirm that what we have is just superficial. Our learning spirit is there but just superficial. And if we continue like this, we will not reap any results.
Good individuals make a great team.
When they came to China to research the market, the crew of "Story of Yanxi Palace" confirmed to me that they had received help and support from the Korean crew. We see that although China is already a strong entertainment power, its spirit of learning is still very high. That makes them even stronger.
I myself have worked in the entertainment industry for many years, I am also confident with the experiences from reality that I have. However, in the current era of development, I also see myself having to change a lot to keep up with the progress of the times, I have never thought about any big problems about mechanisms or support. But each individual must be clearly aware of their own weaknesses and set learning goals, I firmly believe that good individuals will create a large and strong collective.
We can't just spend money to hire good people to do the job, we have to be good ourselves. I have set a goal that in 3 years, I will achieve a part of what I see Korea achieving. During that time, not only me but my team also have to study hard. Every position, big or small, must be good for the work to go smoothly. Only when I see it with my own eyes do I have to admit that Korea is so good while we still have many shortcomings. That is the reason why their entertainment industry is so great, from music, movies to television. All of their market segments are excellent.
When I went to Korea to do fieldwork, the most impressive thing for me was that there were specialized streets. I was familiar with fashion streets, cosmetics streets, food streets… But they also had film studio streets, studio streets, filming streets… All the filming studios were extremely grand, convenient and concentrated in one place. And they were given land by the State to build filming studios.
For many years, I have been thinking about building a large studio to invest in programs, not only for myself but also for many other production units. But for the same number of years, since the idea came up, I still had to struggle with finding land and then investing in the studio. To have a strong and developed cultural industry, the cooperation of many agencies and departments is definitely necessary.
To have a strong Vietnamese cultural industry (before it can step out into the world), each component in the Vietnamese cultural industry must be strong. And to have this strength, we need to learn. We must learn with enthusiasm, with diligence, and we must learn thoroughly.
