At the press conference and press briefing for the first quarter of 2024 on the afternoon of April 9, Mr. Do Quang Hung, Deputy Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Ca Mau province, informed about the site clearance situation for the Ca Mau Airport expansion and upgrade project.
By 2030, Ca Mau Airport can handle up to 1 million passengers/year.
According to Mr. Hung, up to this point, according to the planning submitted to the Ministry of Transport, Ca Mau airport has been expanded to about 230 hectares, the number of households affected by the project is more than 1,000 households.
"While waiting for the Prime Minister to approve the investment policy, the People's Committee of Ca Mau province assigned the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to record, measure and count the entire current status of houses, trees and land.
"When there is an approved policy, it must be implemented immediately to ensure progress," said Mr. Hung.
The People's Committee of Ca Mau province also directed the People's Committee of Ca Mau city to strengthen the mobilization and propaganda for affected organizations, households and individuals to comply with policies and unify the policy of land recovery earlier than the prescribed time.
Ca Mau Airport dates back to the French era, is of level 3C scale, has a runway 1,500m long and 30m wide, and can accommodate aircraft such as ATR72, E190 and equivalent or lower.
The airport has a designed capacity of 200,000 passengers/year, serving 150 passengers/peak hour.
For many years, the port has only operated one flight route from Ca Mau to Ho Chi Minh City and vice versa with a frequency of 5 flights per week.
From April 29, 2023, the direct flight route from Ca Mau to Hanoi will be put into operation with a frequency of three flights per week. Flights are always crowded, but due to limited airport runways, aircraft have to reduce capacity and frequency.
According to the plan, by 2030, Ca Mau Airport will have items such as investing in building a new runway measuring 2,400x45m to the north and 180m away from the existing runway; building a new taxiway connecting the existing apron and the new runway to the north.
At the same time, expand the aircraft parking lot to accommodate four parking positions for medium-range, narrow-body aircraft (A320/321...).
At the same time, the existing passenger terminal will be upgraded to accommodate up to one million passengers per year and the civil aviation area will remain in the same location as the approved plan. The total estimated investment is VND2,253 billion (excluding site clearance costs).
Currently, Ca Mau Airport has one runway measuring 1,500 x 30m, which can accommodate E190 aircraft (reduced load operation) and ATR72 aircraft. The airport is also operating the only flight route from Ho Chi Minh City to Ca Mau, so it cannot meet the travel needs of the people and the growth of the aviation industry.
The planned location of the runway and civil aviation area in the north according to Decision 4149 does not take advantage of the existing civil aviation area because code C aircraft such as A320 and A321 operating on the apron will violate airspace clearance.
