"Vietnam's rice production is less affected by El Nino"
Speaking to Thanh Nien on August 2, Mr. Nguyen Nhu Cuong, Director of the Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), said that El Nino is forecast to affect our country from the end of this year. Accordingly, rice production in 2024 will be affected, but will not cause Vietnam to reduce rice exports.
Vietnam needs to take advantage of opportunities to increase rice exports and increase income for rice growers.
According to Mr. Nguyen Nhu Cuong, in 2015 - 2016, the rice production industry was affected by El Nino and Vietnam had experience in reducing damage. In 2019 - 2020, Vietnam continued to be affected by El Nino more severely than in 2015 - 2016, but the area and level of damage were greatly reduced.
"Compared to other rice-growing countries in the world, Vietnam will be less affected by El Nino because it has solutions to cope with it," said Mr. Cuong.
Increase exports to affirm the position of Vietnamese rice
While the world food market has many fluctuations, due to Russia withdrawing from the grain export agreement through the Black Sea, India and UAE temporarily suspending rice exports, on July 31, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development submitted to the Prime Minister for consideration to issue a Directive on increasing rice exports in the new situation.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam needs to affirm its important role, maintain the position and reputation of Vietnamese rice in the global food supply chain, contributing to ensuring world food security according to Vietnam's international commitments.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development requested the Prime Minister to direct ministries, branches and localities to take drastic measures to increase rice exports. In particular, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is responsible for the production situation, ensuring the target of 43 million tons of rice this year is achieved; taking the lead in promptly handling technical barriers, ensuring increased volume and expanding rice export markets.
Thailand and Vietnam increase rice purchases from farmers
Propose that the Prime Minister assign the Ministry of Industry and Trade to continue promoting rice exports, monitor and forecast the import-export situation, consumption demand, and world rice prices to proactively regulate rice trading, import-export, and improve export efficiency.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also proposed that the Prime Minister direct localities to create all favorable conditions for people and businesses in rice production and trading; immediately remove difficulties and obstacles, ensuring smooth production, circulation and export of rice.
The Vietnam Food Association proactively grasps information about the world rice market, the needs and capacity of rice import-export traders, to promptly inform state management agencies and the rice production and trading community in Vietnam.
