The Ho Chi Minh City Master Plan 2021 - 2030 with a vision to 2050 has identified the urban railway network (metro) associated with the formation and development of urban areas according to the TOD model (model of urban development based on public transport) and with connectivity in the Southeast region. In particular, the city focuses on developing modern metro lines connecting complex centers, satellite cities, industrial parks; developing urban railway industry combined with railway industrial facilities, supporting urban railways.

Specifically, Ho Chi Minh City will build 7 more radial metro lines and 2 belt metro lines, 1 riverside LRT/tramway line and 1 MRT/LRT line connecting to the Can Gio coastal tourist urban area.
Details of 12 urban railway lines expected to be built in Ho Chi Minh City are as follows:
Metro line No. 1 : An Ha (Binh Chanh district) - Long Binh Depot (Thu Duc city) is 40.8km long (currently 17.1km from Long Binh Depot to Ben Thanh market has been put into use). The next phase will continue to build the route from the following points: An Ha - Hoa Binh - Lanh Binh Thang - 3/2 street - Ly Thai To - Cong Hoa six-way intersection - Pham Viet Chanh - Cong Quynh - Pham Ngu Lao - Ben Thanh market connecting with the existing metro line No. 1.
Metro Line No. 2: Thu Thiem (Thu Duc City) - Binh My Depot (Cu Chi District) is 62.2km long. Route direction: Thu Thiem - Mai Chi Tho - Ben Thanh - 23/9 Park - Pham Hong Thai - Cach Mang Thang Tam - Truong Chinh - Tham Luong Bridge - An Suong Bus Station - National Highway 22 - Binh My Depot.

Metro line No. 3 : An Ha (Binh Chanh district) - Hiep Binh Phuoc Depot (Thu Duc city) is 45.8km long. Route direction: An Ha - Le Minh Xuan - Tan Kien Station - National Highway 1 - Kinh Duong Vuong - Hong Bang - Hung Vuong - Cong Hoa 6-way intersection - Nguyen Thi Minh Khai - Xo Viet Nghe Tinh - National Highway 13 - Hiep Binh Phuoc depot.
Metro line No. 4 : Dong Thanh (Hoc Mon district) - Hiep Phuoc urban area (Nha Be district) is 47.3km long. Route direction: Dong Thanh - Ha Huy Giap - Nguyen Oanh - Nguyen Kiem - Truong Son - Nguyen Van Troi - Nhieu Loc canal - Hai Ba Trung - Pasteur - Ben Thanh - Tran Hung Dao - Nguyen Thai Hoc - Nguyen Huu Tho - Ba Chiem bridge - Hiep Phuoc urban area.
Metro Line No. 5: Hung Long University Urban Area (Binh Chanh District) - Vinhomes Grand Park/Song Tac Bus Station (Thu Duc City) is 53.9km long. Route direction: Hung Long University Urban Area - New Can Giuoc Bus Station - National Highway 50 - Cao Xuan Duc - Tung Thien Vuong - Phu Dong Thien Vuong - Ly Thuong Kiet - Hoang Van Thu - Phan Dang Luu - Bach Dang - Dien Bien Phu - Vo Nguyen Giap - Lien Phuong - Long Thuan - Long Phuoc - Branch 1 to Vinhomes Grand Park/Branch 2 to Song Tac Bus Station.
Metro Line 6 (inner belt): Mainly passes through Thu Duc City, District 7, Binh Chanh, inner city districts with a total length of 53.8km. Route direction: At the intersection of Ring Road 2 with Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway, the route has 2 planned railway branches connecting to Phu Huu Station (Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line). The main route runs on the middle of Vo Chi Cong Street through MRT6 Station - Ring Road 2 - Vo Nguyen Giap - Pham Van Dong - Bach Dang - Hong Ha - Tan Son Nhat Airport - Cong Hoa - Truong Chinh - Au Co - Luy Ban Bich - Phu Lam roundabout - Nguyen Van Luong - Ta Quang Buu - Nguyen Thi Thap - Tan Thuan - Vo Chi Cong - Phu Huu Station.
Metro line No. 7 : Tan Kien Station (Binh Chanh District) - Long Binh Depot (Thu Duc City) is 51.2km long. Route direction: Tan Kien Station - Nguyen Van Linh - South of Phong Phu Cooperative Bank Road - Binh Hung Nam Residential Area - Dao Su Tich - Ton Dat Tien - Phu My Hung - Huynh Tan Phat - Tran Bach Dang - Tran Nao - Thao Dien - Thanh Da - Truong Tho - Trinh Cong Son (Rach Chiec) - Road D2 High-tech Park - Vinhomes Grand Park - Long Binh Depot.

Route No. 11 (Tranway/LRT, riverside route) aims to combine tourism development connecting from Binh Tan district to Cu Chi, 48.7km long. Route direction: Existing Western Bus Station (Binh Tan district) - Ly Chieu Hoang - Vo Van Kiet - Me Linh Square - Ton Duc Thang - Ba Son - Saigon riverside road - Cu Chi district.
Line 12 (MRT/LRT, connecting Can Gio district). This line is determined to serve the development needs of Can Gio coastal urban area and tourism development. The line has a connection point from District 7 to Can Gio coastal urban area, 48.7km long. Route direction: Nguyen Van Linh (District 7) - Nguyen Luong Bang - Rung Sac - Can Gio coastal urban area.

In addition, metro lines in Ho Chi Minh City will also connect with some metro lines in Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Long An, and Tay Ninh provinces to facilitate economic development in neighboring provinces.
