Power outages continue to occur in the suburbs of Hanoi. At 8:00 p.m. on June 2, hundreds of households in Ngoc Bai were living in darkness and heat.
Due to the sweltering heat rising from the road, Minh and many people in the village had to go out to the dike to cool off. "Some neighboring areas such as Quoc Oai and Thach That districts have been experiencing continuous power outages during this time. At this rate, we cannot stand it. The elderly and children are the most miserable," said Minh.
Many families brought beds, tables, chairs and mats out onto the street to lie down. "It's so hot, how can the elderly and children stand it?" Mr. Phi Huu Khue (78 years old) lamented.
"Power and water outages are something that old people like us are very afraid of. Luckily, we still use a gas stove at home, so cooking is not affected too much, but I'm afraid that my eyesight is bad and the house is dark, and if I accidentally trip and fall, it will be terrible," said Can Thi Loc (72 years old).
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu (Ngoc Bai village) had to throw all the food in the refrigerator out for fear it would spoil. "If we don't deal with it quickly in this heat, we'll have nothing to eat tomorrow. The yogurt, milk, and ice cream I bought for my children now are all guaranteed to spoil," she said.
Fearing that the heat will affect the health of young children, many families have to bring mats and mosquito nets outside for the children to play on, waiting until the electricity is restored before bringing them inside to sleep.
"The power outage made me feel like I was blind, unable to see anything. If I wanted to get something, I had to grope around or use the light from my phone to shine on it," Duong said with a laugh.
"To cool down from the heat from morning until now, I have to shower 3-4 times. Just sitting for a while makes me sweat profusely," he added.
At 9:00 p.m., it was pitch black, and there were no street lights in many areas of Ngoc Bai village (Quoc Oai district). Duc Anh and Minh An had to use flashlights and phones to light their way home.
During the summer vacation, Huy Phuoc (11 years old) was allowed by his parents to visit his grandparents. Today, he had to go to his relatives' house 3 times to avoid the heat. Phuoc said that in the morning, his grandmother took him to his uncle's house to play because there was electricity there. At 10am, the area lost power, so his grandmother took him to his aunt's house. In the early afternoon, the aunt's house lost power, and the boy and his grandmother returned home.
Knowing about the constant power outages, some families took the opportunity to buy batteries for 350,000 VND.
In the alley where Minh's family lives, there are more than 30 households, and so far 18 households have closed their doors and gone to their neighbors' and relatives' houses in neighboring districts to avoid the heat. "It's so hard, now the alley is pitch black. The house has two batteries, one connected to a fan, one connected to a light bulb for neighbors to sit and cool off," the young man said.
