Need to monitor 'hot spots' at school

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên25/10/2023

As a homeroom teacher for many years, I have known and participated in solving the problem of school violence with my colleagues.

Good civic education still tends to violence

I find that the content of civic education lessons is not enough to change students’ thinking. If teachers are caught up in imparting laws, students will only memorize the lessons but not be able to apply them in real life.

There are many cases where students who like to use violence to resolve conflicts have quite high scores in Civic Education. Through research, I found that these students believe that using violence against their friends is the best way to prove their power and the truth. They also attract factions to stand on their side to threaten and suppress their friends.

To help prevent school violence, schools and teachers need to raise awareness among students that all disagreements, conflicts, and disputes can be resolved through presentation, listening, sympathy, and finding common ground so that both sides are satisfied.

Homeroom teachers should set a good example in their behavior in the community in many ways, taking reconciliation, concessions, and tolerance as the main principles. Teachers should also not use violence against students to set a good example.

In addition to the main lesson, teachers can share more good articles and stories about resolving conflicts in life and the serious consequences of school violence. By listening, observing and expressing their thoughts on this issue, students can gradually come up with solutions based on avoiding conflicts and violence.

Besides the main lesson, teachers can share more good articles and stories about resolving conflicts in life and the serious consequences of school violence.

In addition, schools and teachers can also launch skit performances in class, in front of the school, and write stories about how to handle situations that can lead to school violence.

Solutions from love

My school has nearly 2,000 students. The principal organizes on-site observation and resolves complex situations at hot spots in the school such as stairwells and cafeteria restrooms to prevent school violence.

Camera systems are installed everywhere and there is a department to monitor and promptly resolve issues. Teachers are advised to be more close to students during school hours. Teachers arrive at class 10 minutes before class time each session to grasp the situation of the class. Any unusual problems are recorded and resolved immediately.

At the end of each class, teachers leave with the students, ensuring that no students remain in the classroom or on the school grounds. On the way home, teachers are reminded to pay attention to the students of the school, and if any problems arise, they should participate in resolving and preventing them promptly.

Teachers and students read books together during recess.

Students are reminded not to go to deserted places, far from home, far from school... to resolve the matter at the request of their friends. Self-protection is important. Do not hide from family and teachers to resolve the matter yourself. Even standing by indifferently watching a friend being abused, encouraging with words and actions, not stopping, not informing teachers and family to resolve the matter, participating in the abuse, filming, distributing images, clips of the abuse... are also violations of the rules and the law and will be dealt with.

Using social networks, especially sharing and commenting on each other's images and actions, requires extreme caution because this is the source of disagreements, conflicts leading to violence. Even for adults, disagreements when participating in social networks can lead to violations of the law. Therefore, teachers need to set an example of not using social networks to attack, speak ill of each other or express emotions, share things that are not clearly understood.

For many years, I was the homeroom teacher, and I was always close to the children. Every day, I spent a few minutes visiting the classroom. During recess, I sat with the children. I noted the abnormalities, the anxious and fearful looks, the restlessness and anxiety in the children…

Close coordination between school and family

Teachers organize collective activities, entertainment, experiences, and social work in the locality to build a united, supportive, and progressive collective. Incidents of student fights are often prepared, even announced in advance. In some cases, groups of students even assign roles to each person: directly assaulting, filming, keeping watch, and threatening to prevent the victim from reporting the incident to the school. Through communication channels with students on Zalo and Facebook, teachers need to note that if students discover suspicious details or feel threatened, they need to quickly notify teachers.

In addition, the cooperation between school organizations and parents should be taken seriously. Schools and teachers should not just stop at calling, texting or inviting students to school to make announcements, propose appropriate disciplinary measures to deter them... Instead, there should be sincere meetings, creating conditions for students to see their mistakes and propose ways to strive to correct them. Families and schools should not condemn or be prejudiced against students who make mistakes, but should patiently help them realize their mistakes and voluntarily correct them.

I also built an information network from colleagues and students who always brought me phenomena to note to limit the bad things that happened due to school violence. It didn't take much time, with the care and love for students, my homeroom class and the whole school reduced the problem of school violence to the lowest level, parents trusted, students were truly united and friendly so that every day at school was truly a happy day.
