Talks on Ukraine to take place soon

(CLO) On December 10, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that negotiations related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict could begin "this winter", as Poland prepares to assume the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU) from January 1.

“Among other responsibilities, our presidency will have a shared responsibility for shaping the political landscape and deciding on the negotiations that can start this winter – there are still many questions to be answered,” Prime Minister Tusk told the cabinet. He also expressed hope that the “final result” of the efforts of Poland and the EU would be a stable peace in Ukraine.

However, he did not provide further details about specific efforts or a time frame for the talks, nor did he mention who would be involved or where the talks might take place.

Poland has long been one of Ukraine's strongest supporters in its war with Russia, which begins in February 2022. It will assume the EU presidency just weeks before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in the United States.

Prime Minister Tusk said he would hold a series of meetings with political leaders to discuss the situation in Ukraine. On December 10, he met with Friedrich Merz, leader of Germany's CDU party. Tusk also plans to talk with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to arrive in Warsaw on December 12, and the Polish prime minister said they would discuss the recent meetings Macron held in Paris with Trump and Zelenskyy.

Prime Minister Tusk stressed that Poland will assume the EU presidency in a "very dramatic" context for Europe, with multiple armed conflicts and political crises taking place in the region, along with a change in US leadership.

"I hope that Poland will not only be a country that is always present, but also a country that shapes decisions, ensures security and protects Poland's interests," he said at a government meeting.
