Family photo at the gold shop

A photo taken at a gold shop has been a topic of discussion among the online community in recent days.

On social media platforms, many accounts post photos in the form of images, videos, etc., attracting a large number of viewers and comments.

The photo depicts a family of four posing next to a gold cabinet. However, what has stirred up the online community is the gold price tag in front.

Luat's family photo attracts the online community.

“The buying price of 24k gold is 315,000 VND, the selling price is 325,000 VND. The buying price of 18k gold is 217,000 VND, the selling price is 240,000 VND,” the information is written on the gold price board of the store.

The surprisingly low price of gold has many people skeptical about the authenticity of the photo.

Through research, the above photo of Mr. Truong Dinh Luat's family (46 years old, HCMC), was taken in 1988. Mr. Luat is the boy in the photo, taken with his parents and sister at the family's gold shop.

Mr. Luat said: “At the time of taking the photo, I was in 5th grade. At that time, my family had 4 people, later on there were 2 more siblings. The photo was taken by a Western guest and developed as a gift for my family.

About 2-3 months ago, when the gold price fluctuated, I posted this photo on my personal page. My purpose was just to let my friends feel the huge difference in the price of gold in the past compared to now.

Mr. Luat did not expect that many people would take back his family photo and share it on TikTok, Facebook, Instagram... Recently, his friends saw the photo being shared everywhere so they sent it to him to see.

“When I saw the photo, I was very surprised, I didn’t think people would care so much. Although sharing it doesn’t affect my family, I read some not-so-subtle comments,” Luat shared.

The gold shop in the photo, which was built by Luat’s parents, has long since gone out of business. Currently, only his wife remains in the family, running a feng shui gemstone business at home.

Hot gold price story

Mr. Luat said that the gold market in the 1990s was not as bustling as it is now. At that time, the market only had gold leaves and gold rings, not SJC gold bars. The price of gold was low but many people could not afford to buy 1 tael of gold.

Mr. Luat's small family

During high school, he often helped his parents run the gold shop in his free time. Later, Luat did not follow the family business but switched to other jobs.

When he got married, he guided his wife to trade in precious stones left by his parents. The business was small, with enough income to cover daily expenses and the children's education.

The family photo is part of Mr. Luat's memory that helps many people remember the gold price between 1988 and 1995.

Tai Nguyen account commented: “In the past, only rich people could buy gold, poor people could not.

When the price of gold was 300,000 VND/tael, the salary was about 420,000 VND/month. Now, the monthly salary is 9-10 million, which is equivalent.

Meanwhile, Thanh Huynh shared: “In 1994, I sold 10 taels of gold for 34 million VND.

That amount of money was only enough to buy a Thai Dream motorbike. Nowadays, I can buy a good scooter for about 5 taels of gold.”

Currently, the story about gold prices through the photo of Mr. Luat’s family is still “hot” on forums and social networking groups. Through the story of prices, many people have the opportunity to reminisce about the past, recalling past difficulties.
