The city is located near the confluence of the Negro and Amazon rivers, making it one of only two cities in the Amazon rainforest with a population of over 1 million, alongside Belem.
Located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, Manaus is home to the National Amazonian Research Institute, the most important center for scientific research on the Amazon region.
In the early 20th century, the city was known by the nicknames "Heart of the Amazon" and "City of the Forest". The city boasts a cathedral, opera house, botanical gardens, an ecological park, and museums of regional and indigenous cultures.
