Recently, the Market Management force of Quang Tri province simultaneously inspected, discovered and handled many businesses selling MSG (monosodium glutamate) smuggled from Thailand (“Cai Muong” brand MSG) at many markets in the province.

During the inspection process at wholesale markets in Quang Tri province such as Dong Ha market, Dien Sanh, Quang Tri,... the market management force discovered and handled many households trading in smuggled MSG. However, this number only reflects a part of the current situation of smuggling MSG in the province.

This is not the first time the local market management agency has inspected MSG smuggled from Thailand. It can be seen that if people’s “foreign preference” habits do not change, the situation of smuggled MSG will continue.

Smuggled MSG is rampant due to people's "foreign preference" habit

It is known that this “Cai Muong” brand MSG is produced by THAI FERMENTATION IND. CO.,LTD., in Thailand and transported to Laos. From here, “Cai Muong” brand MSG is smuggled across the border between Vietnam and Laos, then transported by road to markets in the domestic market of Vietnam for consumption. On the bag of smuggled “Cai Muong” brand MSG, there is no information in Vietnamese about the origin, origin, label or product ingredients as well as expiration date...

The packaging of smuggled MSG has absolutely no information in Vietnamese.

There is no information about the product, no clear information about the ingredients inside and the harmful effects of this smuggled MSG, but why do consumers still use it and it seems to have become a habit in cooking?

When we asked this question to Ms. TH, who sells food products at Dong Ha market, we received the answer: "Of course foreign goods are better than Vietnamese goods." Ms. MT, who was also shopping at the market, said that her family has been using this MSG for a long time and although she does not understand the words printed on the packaging, she still trusts it because "it is Thai goods."

With such thoughts, genuine MSG products produced domestically with quality guaranteed by the state are indifferent to consumers. Moreover, although the selling price of this smuggled MSG is higher than that of domestically produced products by about 5,000 VND/500g package, it accounts for the majority of MSG market share in Quang Tri in particular and the Central provinces in general.

In addition, there is one thing that consumers do not pay attention to and do not know, which is that there is also fake MSG of this smuggled MSG on the market. It is very difficult for consumers to distinguish and recognize which is smuggled MSG and which is fake MSG, so many times they think they have bought foreign goods (smuggled goods) but in fact they have bought fake goods, which is even more dangerous.

The "unpredictable" harm of MSG of unknown origin

According to nutrition experts, smuggled MSG, unknown origin, counterfeit goods do not ensure food hygiene and safety and always pose a potential risk to the health of users.

Assessing the quality of this smuggled MSG, Dr. Tran Thi Kim Chi - Head of the Department of Nutrition - Gia Dinh People's Hospital said: " The immediate harm to consumers' health is acute poisoning or allergies from impure ingredients in smuggled MSG products that can cause consumers, within a short period of time after use, to have symptoms such as headache, dizziness, even nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain...

And even more dangerous, the hidden part of the iceberg that we don't know about is long-term chronic poisoning, which can affect important organs in the body, leading to liver failure, kidney failure, or even for many years there may be toxic substances, harmful chemicals that are carcinogenic, increasing the risk of cancer ."

Not only affecting consumers' health, smuggled MSG also causes significant damage to the country's economy, because this is an act of fraud and tax evasion, and also affects legitimate businesses.

It can be seen that the consumption habits of the people are helping smuggled MSG in particular and smuggled goods in general have more opportunities to exist in the market and continue to be a worrying threat to food hygiene and safety.
