On August 12, the Ministry of Health announced that since the beginning of 2023, the country has recorded over 57,290 cases of dengue fever (DF) and 13 deaths. Notably, the number of dengue fever cases in Hanoi is increasing very high with over 3,180 cases (5.7 times higher than the same period in 2022) and no deaths have been recorded.
The Ministry of Health also warned that this is the peak of the epidemic season, and the number of dengue fever cases is forecast to increase if drastic measures are not taken to prevent the epidemic. Therefore, it is recommended that localities closely monitor the situation of dengue fever cases in the area, grasp existing and newly emerging outbreaks, thoroughly handle outbreaks as soon as they are detected, and prevent the epidemic from breaking out, spreading, and prolonging. Organize and implement more vigorously environmental sanitation campaigns to eradicate mosquito larvae.
The Ministry of Health requested the Director of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology to immediately set up a working group to directly inspect, monitor, and support Hanoi in technical expertise in dengue prevention. At the same time, instruct localities in the area in charge to closely monitor the situation of patients in the area, ensure early detection of patients for timely treatment, and avoid the disease from becoming severe; organize thorough handling as soon as outbreaks are detected and actively spray chemicals to kill mosquitoes in high-risk areas according to the instructions of the Ministry of Health.
For hospitals, the Ministry of Health requires good organization of patient admission and treatment, minimizing deaths due to dengue fever, especially at private medical facilities, avoiding the situation where patients do not receive timely consultation, emergency care, treatment and referral; at the same time, there is a plan to allocate treatment routes, support lower levels, and avoid hospital overload.
