This is a temporary solution in the context of an increasing number of patients coming for examination and treatment, hospital overload, while the project to build a new 15-storey building of Gia Dinh People's Hospital has been delayed for many years and it is unknown when it will be completed.

Overloaded, Gia Dinh People's Hospital had to break down the wall to borrow temporary treatment facilities.

Wall chiseling to transfer patient

To facilitate movement to the Oncology Hospital, for many months Gia Dinh People's Hospital had to break down the wall between the buildings of the two hospitals, creating a temporary corridor for patients and medical staff to move.

Doctor Nguyen Hoang Hai - Director of Gia Dinh People's Hospital - said that the number of patients coming to the hospital for examination and treatment has recently increased, about 4,000 visits/day. With the existing facilities, according to doctor Hai, "it does not meet the needs of medical examination and treatment".

This is also the reason why the hospital asked for permission to "borrow" building block B of Oncology Hospital 1 (where a high-tech early disease screening and diagnosis center is being built) to serve as inpatient treatment departments of Gia Dinh People's Hospital.

"This has been going on for 7-8 months now, and is a temporary solution at the moment. In the long term, we are looking forward to the completion of the new 15-storey building to meet the needs of medical examination and treatment," said Dr. Hai.

Speaking to Tuoi Tre, the leader of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health also confirmed that this is a temporary solution. "When building the new Gia Dinh People's Hospital, some existing departments were demolished, so the number of patients was concentrated in the remaining area, which was very cramped.

In addition, the Oncology Hospital, Facility 1, has basically moved to Facility 2, and while waiting for the construction of a screening and early diagnosis center, the arrangement of lending the treatment facility is appropriate to the reality, otherwise it would be a waste to leave it empty. The hospital has asked for permission and received approval from the Department of Health for this," he said.

Proposal for use of Colombia Hospital facilities

In addition to the solution of breaking the wall and borrowing the facilities of the Oncology Hospital, a solution that is considered quite feasible for Gia Dinh People's Hospital at this time is to propose permission to use the land and facilities of Colombia Asia Gia Dinh International Hospital (No. 1 No Trang Long, Binh Thanh District) - a unit that has just announced to stop all operations from January 31, 2024 because its investment certificate has expired.

Doctor Nguyen Hoang Hai confirmed that the unit has sent a petition to the Department of Health and the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee on this matter.

"This is a piece of land located in the middle of the Gia Dinh People's Hospital campus. If we have this facility, it will be very suitable, we will greatly relieve the pressure on the cramped clinic area" - Dr. Hai shared.

According to Tuoi Tre's investigation, Gia Dinh People's Hospital has sent an official dispatch to the relevant authorities regarding the transfer of the above land to the management and use unit for medical examination and treatment purposes.

The hospital explained that for many years the hospital has always been overloaded, regularly providing emergency care to an average of 250 to 300 patients per day, treating more than 1,500 patients per day, and examining about 4,000 outpatients per day.

The hospital has made many efforts to create more space to reduce overload, such as adding more beds and using doctors' and nurses' rooms for patients, but there are still not enough rooms for patients.

Currently, the hospital lacks floor space to meet treatment needs and does not have offices for doctors and nurses as required.

How long is the delay?

The project to build a new building to replace the inpatient area of Gia Dinh People's Hospital was started on March 17, 2020 with a scale of two 15-storey buildings from the Ho Chi Minh City budget, the career development fund and loans with a total investment of more than 600 billion VND.

The project is managed by the contractor Thanh Do Construction Group Joint Stock Company and this is one of the projects that has been repeatedly "named" for being behind schedule. Actual records show that this project is still under construction, but at a moderate level.

A leader of Gia Dinh People's Hospital shared that this project is a very "headache" problem for the hospital and hopes to soon have a solution.
