On July 24, Gia Lai Provincial Police announced that they had arrested and extradited Le Thi Hong Vui (37 years old, residing in Hung Thinh Commune, Hung Nguyen District, Nghe An Province) to Gia Lai for fraud and property appropriation.
Previously, on July 15, 2024, Gia Lai Provincial Police received information about a crime from Ms. H (residing in Australia) accusing the subject Vui of taking advantage of Ms. H's admiration for Mr. Thich Minh Tue to defraud and appropriate more than 250 million VND from Ms. H.
Ms. H said: “Around May 2024, when monk Thich Minh Tue went on alms round from the North to the South, because I admired him, I flew from Australia to Vietnam to meet him in Quang Tri province. I also joined the group on alms round for about 3 days and then returned to Australia to continue living and working. During the walk, Vui got to know me, through Zalo, I often asked Vui about monk Minh Tue's health and practice. From June 10 to early July 2024, Vui texted and called me many times, saying he needed money to take care of monk Minh Tue such as: buying clothes, personal belongings, going to the doctor, treating illnesses... and repairing the house, buying household items for Mr. Tue's parents. Trusting Vui and willing to admire Mr. Minh Tue, I transferred money to Vui to take care of the work a total of 9 times”.
Because she suspected Le Thi Hong Vui of fraud and property appropriation, on July 12, 2024, Ms. H flew from Australia to Vietnam to meet Vui to clarify. However, Vui blocked her from contacting Ms. H on Zalo. Therefore, she went to meet Mr. Tue and his family in Gia Lai province and only then did she know that Vui had defrauded her of her money.
Urgently investigating the crime report from Ms. H, the Security Investigation Department quickly verified and sent a working group to Nghe An to coordinate in arresting the subject Vui. However, Le Thi Hong Vui had fled her residence.
After more than 7 days of searching, on July 22, Nghe An Provincial Police arrested Vui while she was withdrawing money at a bank in Vinh City.
At the police station, Vui confessed to all his crimes: "At first, I only asked her to transfer a small amount of money, but seeing that Ms. H did not suspect anything, I took advantage of her fanaticism and repeatedly coaxed her to transfer money to me, which I used for personal expenses."
Gia Lai Provincial Police will continue to investigate and strictly handle Le Thi Hong Vui for fraud and property appropriation; at the same time, expand the investigation to clarify related subjects.
Mr. Thich Minh Tue himself has repeatedly stated that he does not accept any money from anyone. Therefore, people need to be vigilant, not to transfer money or donate to those who take advantage of Mr. Thich Minh Tue's name and image to call for donations in any form.
