Chinese shooter Pham Quang Huy defeated his Korean opponent Lee Won-ho to win the gold medal in the men's 10m air pistol event this morning, September 28.
Quang Huy competed with seven athletes in the final. He scored 240.5 points - above athletes Lee Won-ho (239.4 points, currently ranked second in the world in the men's 10m air pistol event) and Svechnikov Vladimir (219.9 points, Uzbekistan).
In the first five-shot series, Quang Huy was one of four shooters with three or more 10s and a total score of 49.1 - behind Johnathan Wong Guanjie (Malaysia, 50 points), Sarabjot Singh (India, 49.7 points), Svechnikov Vladimir (Uzbekistan, 49.5 points) and equal to Zhang Bowen (China, 49.1 points).
In the second series, the Vietnamese shooter shot with his hands, scoring over 10 points - the lowest was 10.1 and the highest was 10.8. Thanks to that, he rose to share the top spot with Vladimir with a total score of 99.6.
From the third round, each shooter fired two shots, and the last place was eliminated. Quang Huy continued to play steadily. After scoring 119.3 points, 140.2 points, and 160.8 points, he rose to the top of the leaderboard with 181.1 in the sixth round and 201.1 in the seventh round. Meanwhile, Cheema Arjun Singh, Atallah Nidaa K, Guanjie, Bowen, and Singh were eliminated one after another.
After entering the top 3, Quang Huy did not let the pressure affect him and maintained his leading position until the end. In the eighth round, he shot 9.9 and 10.3 respectively to raise his total score to 220.9 - 0.6 more than Lee Won-ho. Vladimir scored 219.9 so he stopped and received the bronze medal.
In the final series, Quang Huy shot 10.4 and 9.9, while Lee got 10.1 and 9.0 respectively.
Quang Huy is the son of famous Vietnamese shooter Pham Cao Son. His achievements helped the Vietnamese sports delegation win the first gold medal at the Asian Games, and at the same time ended the 41-year thirst for an Asian Games gold medal for Vietnamese shooting.
