Worry about children "falling behind"
Ms. Ly Minh Hanh (Gia Lam district, Hanoi) said that her child will enter first grade this year. After Tet, she sent her child to pre-primary school. "This summer, I will probably register to send my child to the first grade teacher's house all day so that she can train him thoroughly. I hope that when he enters first grade, he will not be surprised because he is already familiar with the teacher and knows a lot of knowledge in advance," Ms. Hanh said.
In fact, the choice of sending their children to preschool is quite common among many parents today. The mentality of not wanting their children to fail right from the starting line is that when parents send their children to preschool, other parents are also eager to find classes or gather groups to ask teachers to teach them. But if you ask clearly what preschool is, most parents think that it is learning math, writing, and comparing friend A and friend B who can read stories fluently, do addition and subtraction within 10 proficiently... but few people care about other skills.
Not only do teachers open their own classes, parents set up study groups, but many private schools and international schools in cities now enroll students in pre-primary classes. Tuition fees for each course range from a few million to over 100 million VND/course depending on the school. For example, Hanoi Academy International Bilingual School (Tay Ho District, Hanoi) enrolls students in pre-primary classes at any time during the school year for students preparing to enter grade 1. The program includes Math, English, physical health, self-confidence training, creativity... In addition, children also focus on practicing skills such as: greetings, thanking, apologizing, taking responsibility habits... Tuition for 12 months is over 100 million VND, not including meals, uniforms, learning materials, school development fees...
Many schools offer courses every Saturday and Sunday lasting about 3 months, which are also trusted by parents who want to experience the learning environment at the school before deciding whether to officially enroll in elementary school here or not.
Luggage is not Math, Vietnamese?
With the current pre-primary education movement, many pre-primary teacher training courses are continuously recruiting students. Many preschool teachers and specialized teachers also participate in training in this field. A pre-primary teacher training course is introduced with 3 contents: Writing, Reading and Math. In which, teachers need to guide sitting posture, standard pen holding, how to write 16 basic strokes, 29 lowercase letters, reading - writing - correct pronunciation techniques, writing 11 compound letters from basic to advanced, word and sentence combination techniques, scientific coordinate scoring methods...
Thus, pre-primary education is mainly revolving around writing and doing math fluently, rather than preparing the mindset and skills needed to adapt and get used to activities within the school framework. Equipping children with a good spirit and solid knowledge in the pre-primary stage is essential. However, this knowledge does not mean learning the program in advance, and does not set the goal of knowing how to do math, write, and read fluently before entering grade 1, putting pressure on children and their parents.
Whether or not to study in pre-primary school is the choice of each family. However, according to many experts and teachers with many years of experience in teaching primary school, teaching children to study in advance is not necessarily good because when children know, when they officially enter school, they will no longer be interested or enthusiastic about studying. Not to mention that if children are not trained in the correct sitting posture, how to hold a pen, etc., teachers will have to correct them, which is even more difficult.
Ms. Do Thi Mai Thanh - former Principal of Vietnam - Cuba Primary School (Ba Dinh District, Hanoi) said that many parents want their children to learn to read right away when entering grade 1 because the children are not prepared, most of them will be confused, and do not have the confidence to be confident. Parents do not need to be too burdensome and spend too much money on pre-grade courses for their children, but should prepare the necessary luggage with their children, including the basics such as teaching children how to work independently, helping them learn how to hold a pen firmly, training children to concentrate when sitting at the desk, what posture to have when studying...
