Speaking to the press on the sidelines of the Ministry of Transport's 2023 Annual Review Conference on the morning of December 28, Mr. Le Hong Ha, General Director of Vietnam Airlines, said that many domestic airlines have faced difficulties in the recent period. In particular, Bamboo Airways has a large surplus of pilots due to aircraft reduction.
Bamboo has hundreds of surplus pilots and flight attendants after downsizing its aircraft fleet.
"Vietnamese airlines operate according to market principles, but in difficult conditions they still support and help each other," said Mr. Ha.
Vietnam Airlines Group is facing many difficulties due to the impact and consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic and is having to strongly restructure, especially its member airline Pacific Airlines.
With Bamboo Airways, the General Director of Vietnam Airlines said that they have discussed to "find opportunities to help within their capacity". Accordingly, Bamboo plans to use Pacific Airlines' ground services, which also helps Pacific Airlines have more jobs for its workers.
In particular, with Bamboo's surplus pilots after reducing the size of its fleet, Vietnam Airlines "has a program to evaluate and select suitable pilot positions to use within its capabilities".
Regarding the aviation market in 2023, the leader of Vietnam Airlines said that the international market has not recovered as expected compared to the world. The domestic market reached the level of 2019, but showed signs of slowing down from the fourth quarter of this year.
Vietnam Airlines has also finalized a "wet lease" order for additional aircraft to serve the peak Tet holiday season. More than 500 flights will be added during Tet, and more night flights will be operated to relieve passengers.
In addition, Mr. Dang Ngoc Hoa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airlines, said that in 2024, the world's political and economic situation is forecast to continue to face many difficulties, and passenger travel demand in the Pacific region is forecast to not fully recover compared to before the pandemic. Domestically, airlines will find it difficult to achieve growth compared to 2023.
Vietnam Airlines plans to maintain market share on key routes, expand international routes, and open a series of transcontinental routes to Canada, Italy, and Nordic countries.
Previously, at the summary conference of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, the leader of Bamboo Airways said that the airline only has 10 aircraft and only operates 16 domestic routes, compared to the peak period when there were up to more than 60 domestic routes.
Therefore, Bamboo Airways has a lot of surplus labor, including hundreds of surplus pilots and about 500 surplus flight attendants.
