The African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council said it has decided on Gabon's membership following this week's military coup.
Gabonese security forces patrol the streets of the capital Libreville, after a group of military officers declared themselves in power, August 30, 2023. |
The body “decides to immediately suspend Gabon’s participation in all activities of the AU, its organs and institutions until constitutional order is restored in the country,” Al Jazeera reported, citing a statement on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that the AU “strongly condemns the military takeover of power in the Republic of Gabon, which overthrew President Ali Bongo on 30 August 2023.”
The announcement came after a council meeting on the situation in Gabon following the August 30 coup, amid a disputed election in which Ali Bongo Ondimba was declared the winner. The military takeover ended nearly six decades of Bongo family rule and created a difficult equation for a region that has struggled to cope with eight coups since 2020.
