Adelaide University Launch Ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City on the evening of September 11
Direct admission of Vietnamese students based on academic records
AU may not be a strange name to Vietnamese international students, as this school was established based on the merger of 2 of the 3 universities in Adelaide City, The University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia. Although newly established, AU was immediately invited to "admit" to the group of 8 leading Australian universities (Group of Eight), replacing the position of The University of Adelaide, which will no longer exist in 2026.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Rishen Shekhar, Director of Recruitment and Global Engagement at the University of South Australia, said that when it starts operating in early 2026, AU will become the 5th or 6th largest university in Australia. Students currently studying at either university before the merger will also transfer to the new university from 2026 and in the coming time, the staff of both sides will work together to reshape the next activities.
“This is a unique opportunity for us to improve teaching and learning. However, we do not want to modify by combining the current training programs of The University of Adelaide with the University of South Australia, but develop it based on the feedback from the larger team of scholars after the merger. AU has launched 200 degree programs in many fields and this number will continue to increase,” Mr. Shekhar shared.

The director noted that Vietnam has a rapidly growing economy, so the demand for high-quality human resources is huge and the AU can help address this through training activities. "Our research focus is on the fields of creativity and culture, defense and national security, agriculture, health and green transformation," Mr. Shekhar added.
In addition to studying abroad, Mr. Ivan Li, Acting Director of International Recruitment at The University of Adelaide, said that AU will actively participate in other educational activities such as internships, work placements and student exchange programs. "We are aiming to be in the top five nationally for student experience and become a leading institution for student employability," Mr. Li affirmed.
According to information from AU, the school will directly admit Vietnamese students based on their grade 12 transcripts, with the lowest requirement being 7.8 and the highest being 9. Most undergraduate programs will last for 3 years. The school also offers many scholarship programs with values ranging from 10-50% of the full tuition fee for candidates with excellent academic results, either alumni or studying at AU's partner institutions.

Strengthening Vietnam - Australia relations
Speaking from Australia, South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas said AU is a forward-looking university that has both a rich history and high-quality research. "The university is located in the heart of Adelaide, offering many opportunities for those who want to enjoy life," Malinauskas said.
Ms. Rebecca Ball, Senior Trade Counselor of the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) in Vietnam, said that the relationship between Australia and Vietnam is very good, as 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations and earlier this year Australia became a comprehensive strategic partner with Vietnam. "Education is an important part of this relationship," Ms. Ball commented.
In addition to cooperation with the federal government, Ms. Ball said the South Australian government is also expanding cooperation with Vietnam, as demonstrated by recent visits by senior leaders. Australia always focuses on investing in facilities, teaching staff and different levels of education, and AU's recruitment of Vietnamese students in key fields such as fintech, gaming, artificial intelligence, health, etc. will create more opportunities for study and work, according to the female counselor.

According to statistics from the Australian Department of Education, by May 2024, there were 704,931 international students studying courses in Australia. Of which, Vietnam had 33,765 people, ranking 5th. At leading schools, the number of Vietnamese students and researchers accounts for a significant proportion, about 600 people at The University of Melbourne, 400 people at The University of Adelaide, or in the top 10 in terms of international students at The University of Queensland...
