The information was revealed by Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the State Duma (lower house of parliament), Russia. He added that the meeting could take place in February or March. The Russian lower house official expressed hope that the two leaders would discuss the situation in the Middle East.
“The work requires serious preparation and I am not revealing any secrets when I say that it is at its peak,” Slutsky was quoted by RIA as saying, but he refused to speculate on when exactly the meeting might take place.
President Trump and his counterpart Putin have both expressed a desire to hold a meeting with an agenda that could include nuclear arms control and global energy prices, as well as the US leader's stated goal of quickly ending the fighting in Ukraine.
Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, on February 6, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that determining the role of the new US administration in future negotiations has become difficult.
“Everything depends on the concrete actions and plans of the new administration. There have been a lot of words and statements so far, but the steps that can be taken are still unclear,” she said.
According to her, Moscow will wait for concrete steps from Washington before making any assessments and in the current context, it is " too early to discuss the prospects for negotiations or anything".
The spokeswoman reiterated that Russia has clearly stated and repeatedly reiterated its approach to resolving the conflict in Ukraine and that Moscow is now ready for negotiations, but Washington needs to "formulate its own policy."
Asked whether Moscow was disappointed with US President Donald Trump and his policies, Zakharova said: "We are ready to work substantively with anyone who has a mutually respectful approach based on international law, bilateral agreements, common human norms of civilized communication, understanding that actions must match words, that everyone is responsible for what they say or do."
