The dispute between Arm and Qualcomm is showing signs of cooling down as Qualcomm confirmed a major turning point in the lawsuit. According to Sascha Segan, Senior Manager of Public Affairs at Qualcomm, Arm has withdrawn its notice of infringement dated October 22, 2024 and has no plans to terminate the Qualcomm Architecture License Agreement.

On Arm’s side, during the quarterly financial report, CFO Jason Child affirmed that the lawsuit will not affect the company’s revenue. He emphasized that Arm had anticipated an adverse outcome when planning its finances, and said that the main purpose of the lawsuit was to protect intellectual property. However, financially, Arm has assumed that Qualcomm will continue to pay royalties at the current level.
The case centers on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X line of processors, which are powered by the Oryon cores that are at the heart of the dispute between the two companies. If Arm wins, the chip line could be severely damaged. But with Arm showing signs of giving up, Qualcomm has reason to be optimistic about its prospects.
The legal battle between the two sides began in 2021 when Qualcomm acquired CPU design company Nuvia. Arm alleged that the deal caused both Nuvia and Qualcomm to violate their licensing agreements and illegally use Arm's technology to develop the Oryon chip. The outcome of the lawsuit could affect not only Qualcomm but also major corporations such as Nvidia, Microsoft and Apple.
A major turning point came in December 2024, when a jury ruled in Qualcomm’s favor on two of Arm’s three claims. Qualcomm later issued a statement welcoming the decision, asserting that its products were in compliance with its contract with Arm and that it would continue to develop high-performance processors.
While the lawsuit isn't completely over, recent developments suggest that Arm may concede defeat, paving the way for Qualcomm to continue developing the Snapdragon X series of chips without major legal obstacles in the near future.
