Sweating is often seen as evidence of a strenuous workout, or a sign that someone is in an uncomfortable situation. But few people know that sweat can be used to provide information about the subject's health. Measurement "at the user's fingertips" may become a reality in the near future, with Apple recently filing a patent for an unspecified product called "Wearable device capable of measuring sweat".

Measuring sweat to provide health indicators could be a feature on future Apple Watches. But it's not difficult for many people to realize that the device that Apple wants to realize its research is its smartwatch line.

In the illustration section of the application, the product shown is an Apple Watch, along with a description of its function as "providing users with information related to their health and fitness."

In a filing with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Apple said: "Other embodiments relate to a device used to calculate the amount of sweat of a user, wherein the device includes a housing having a surface that contacts the skin, a sweat sensor including a first electrode and a second electrode, and a processor configured to calculate the amount of sweat as measured by the sweat sensor." The company also said that a second sensor could be added and the data collected from this component would be used to calculate the amount of sweat and store this data in the memory of the Apple Watch.

Also in the profile, the manufacturer said that when Apple Watch users perform exercises such as walking, running, cycling... the device can calculate the estimated sweat rate "during the first part of the workout to help users know the total amount of fluid lost during the activity".

The short period that follows, which can last as little as 5 seconds, is used to calculate and provide an instantaneous sweat rate to give the user information about "the rate of fluid loss at a given point in time during exercise, as well as the total loss over the entire exercise."

But users also need to understand that not every application Apple files becomes a patent, and not all of this intellectual property becomes a specific feature or device sold commercially on the market.
