Every day, a series of new trends in fashion, lifestyle, and even ways of thinking are spread on social media platforms. With the desire to be recognized and the fear of being left behind, many young people have tried to follow the new trend.

Nguyen Thuy Linh (a third-year student at Hanoi National University) spends all day on her phone, scrolling through Tiktok and Instagram. Therefore, she updates any "hot" trends on social media because she is afraid of being left out if she doesn't keep up with the news and doesn't know about the "dramas" that have just happened.

Because she was afraid of being "behind her friends", Thuy Linh tried every dish that was trending on Tiktok or any coffee shop that was popular with young people and posted it on her personal page. She wanted to show her friends that she was a trend-setter, not a laggard.

Dang The Nam (a 12th grader in Hanoi) followed the trend, causing him to skip breakfast for many days. Seeing his friends boasting about having tickets to "go see their idols", Nam was determined to buy them too.

Knowing that asking his parents would not give him money, Nam had to borrow money from his friends and ask his parents to advance him money for breakfast and snacks before going to extra classes to buy tickets. For two months straight, Nam had to go to class in the morning and extra classes in the evening on an empty stomach.

Holding the "idol chase" ticket in hand is very important to Nam. At least in the eyes of his friends, he is someone who is not "left behind".

Many young people consider following trends as a "must-have" lifestyle, so they fall into an unhealthy cycle of comparison and competition. Because of the pressure to follow trends, they have to shop and spend more than they can afford, causing them to carry a significant financial burden.

Many people have to borrow money, have to work extra to have money to buy clothes, accessories, new technology products... Because of this, many people fall into debt and stress in managing spending.

In addition to having to spend more on unnecessary expenses, many young people also suffer from psychological consequences when they follow trends. According to psychological experts, one of the common problems that many young people face is a feeling of inferiority and loss of self-confidence.

When they fail to keep up with new trends, many young people feel "out of date" or lack the energy to fit in. This can lead to a loss of personal identity, because they are not necessarily doing what they really like, but trying to do what others consider "trendy".

Besides, following the trend of social networks makes many young people always compare themselves with the "perfect" image of others, which makes them feel dissatisfied with their appearance, style and current life.

Experts say it is important for young people to master trends and not let them affect their lives. Instead of following the crowd, young people should take the time to find out what they really like, what brings joy and meaning to their lives.
