Speaking at a conference of Sudanese political and civil groups held in Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister and Migration and Diaspora Affairs Badr Abdel Atty reaffirmed Cairo's stance that any genuine political solution to the Sudanese crisis must be based on a purely Sudanese vision, free from external imposition or pressure.

Mr. Abdel Atty stressed that the current conflict is fundamentally a Sudanese issue that requires a comprehensive political solution. Any future political process must involve all Sudanese national actors, respect the principles of sovereignty and non-interference in the country’s internal affairs, and protect the Sudanese state and its institutions.

Egypt’s top diplomat called for an immediate and lasting end to military operations in Sudan, to protect the resources of its people and state institutions. Urging all delegates to the conference to prioritize Sudan’s national interests, Atty Abdul affirmed Egypt’s unwavering support for all efforts aimed at restoring stability, progress and prosperity to the country.

Welcoming the stance of Sudan’s neighbors, which are hosting millions of Sudanese citizens and sharing their limited resources, he also called on the international community to uphold the commitments made at donor conferences in Geneva in 2023 and Paris in 2024, to address Sudan’s financial shortfall.

Egypt hosts hundreds of thousands of Sudanese, along with nearly 5 million Sudanese citizens who have lived in Egypt for years. The Egyptian government has provided emergency aid, including food, shelter and medical supplies, to Sudanese affected by the conflict in Sudan.

This conference is the latest in a series of Egyptian efforts to resolve the crisis and end the conflict in Sudan, in cooperation with regional and international partners, especially Sudan’s neighbors. In July 2023, Egypt hosted the Sudan Neighboring Countries Summit to discuss various aspects of the situation in Sudan and possible solutions to end the crisis.

Sudan has been engulfed in conflict since April last year, when army commanders and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) rejected annexation plans and began fighting for control of the territory. The ongoing fighting has made it nearly impossible to deliver aid to people in the war zones. Many humanitarian warehouses, grain storage facilities and water wells have been destroyed, while bringing in aid from neighboring Chad has been difficult.

The conflict in Sudan has fueled the world’s largest displacement crisis, with nearly 10 million people displaced within the country and 2 million seeking refuge in neighboring countries. According to data released by the Egyptian government, more than 500,000 Sudanese have crossed into Egypt since the conflict began.
