From the 2024-2025 season, the AFC will apply groundbreaking changes in the organization of club tournaments. Accordingly, the playground of Asian clubs will be restructured into 3 levels. The highest level is AFC Champions League Elite (ACL Elite), the second level is AFC Champions League Two (ACL Two) and the third level is AFC Challenge League (ACGL). The restructuring of AFC club tournaments aims to expand the number of clubs participating in continental arenas at different levels, thereby helping Asian football improve the quality of the 2 leading club tournaments, while creating opportunities for clubs from countries with developing football to participate. According to the national championship rankings announced by the AFC, the Vietnam National Championship (V-League) is ranked 14th in Asia and 7th in East Asia. The top 5 national championships according to the AFC rankings are Saudi Arabia, Japan, Korea, UAE and Qatar. In East Asia alone, the top three national championships are in Japan, South Korea and China.

Notably, the Thai League ranked 4th in East Asia and 8th in Asia; Malaysia (Malaysia Super League) ranked 6th in East Asia and 12th in Asia. This helped Thailand and Malaysia win 1 spot in ACL Elite and 1 spot in ACL Two. ACL Elite will have 24 teams participating in the group stage, including 12 teams in the West region and 12 teams in the East region. ACL Two includes 32 teams participating in the group stage and also applies the same competition format as the ACL Elite tournament. ACLGL is expected to have 20 teams participating in the group stage and divided into 5 groups, including 3 groups in West Asia and 2 groups in East Asia. Based on the rankings of Asian national championships at the club level, V-League is ranked 7th in the East Asia region, so Vietnam will have 1 direct entry and 1 play-off spot in the ACL Two tournament in the 2025-2026 season.
