Turn adversity into motivation
Phan Thanh Khang was born and raised in Gia Lai in a family of four. His father was a mechanic, the main breadwinner, and devoted himself to taking care of his wife and children. Family life was relatively stable until Khang was in 10th grade, when his father was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. The terrible disease caused the whole family to fall into financial and mental difficulties. His mother, Hong Thi Lai (47 years old), became the sole support for the two brothers, working as a janitor and sewing to earn extra income.
During the 6 months of treatment for his father, the family had to sell their house in Gia Lai to pay for the hospital fees. However, the disease got worse, and following his father's wish to return to his hometown, the whole family moved to Quang Nam. The new life was full of economic difficulties, and at times Khang thought about dropping out of school to help his mother, but the saying: "Study well, that is the best way to help your mother" became Khang's guiding principle, helping him persevere with his studies , aiming to get a scholarship to reduce the financial burden.

Mother is the support, brother is the motivation for Khang to strive. More than anyone, Khang understands his mother's sacrifice. The image of his mother saving money to take care of the family, skipping meals to go to work gives him more motivation to strive. His brother Phan Thanh An (2004) has autism, and is also the one who motivates Khang. Because he always tries hard to study, spending 7-8 hours a day with books. "Seeing him not surrender to fate, I have to try even harder," Khang shared. Khang wants to become a filial son, nurturing the dream of doing charity work with his mother and brother, helping people in difficult circumstances like his family before.
Journey to conquer dreams
Despite transferring schools in the middle of 11th grade, Khang quickly adapted to the new environment . With constant efforts, he was selected for the Physics Excellent Student team and won the second prize at the Quang Nam Provincial level. That achievement further motivated him to persevere in pursuing his education. Khang's fate with Information Technology came in high school, when he started to get acquainted with programming. The first lines of code on Pascal made him passionate, "the more I wrote, the more I liked it", Khang recalled. Realizing that this was a potential field in the future, Khang decided to pursue this field. As a result, Khang was admitted to the Vietnam - Korea University of Information Technology and Communications, with the position of 1st runner-up. "This achievement is not too high, but with my situation, I am really grateful to the school, because this is both recognition and a great source of encouragement", Khang expressed.
Khang participated in student exchange activities of the school in Korea.
For Khang, overcoming difficulties is the way to change fate. “Being born into poverty is not my fault, but if I don’t try, my life and that of my loved ones will always be difficult,” Khang affirmed.
In that journey, support from social organizations is an important source of encouragement. Khang once sent a letter to Tien Phong newspaper in the hope of receiving a scholarship to continue his studies. He believes that this support not only helps him to move forward but also inspires young people in similar situations to rise up strongly.
Khang is still trying hard for his dream.
Looking back on the past, Khang did not forget to express his gratitude to the program " Supporting the valedictorians 2024 " and Tien Phong newspaper for bringing a memorable experience in Ho Chi Minh City. "I am very grateful to the Organizing Committee for taking good care of me and the valedictorians, creating opportunities for me and the valedictorians to broaden our horizons, exchange and share with each other," Khang expressed.
