4 diets that are beneficial for people with hypothyroidism

VnExpressVnExpress24/07/2023

The Paleo and Mediterranean diets, which prioritize plant-based foods and limit processed meats, help people with hypothyroidism reduce inflammation.

According to the American Thyroid Association, people with hypothyroidism (thyroid hormone deficiency) often experience symptoms such as weight gain, fatigue, dry skin, constipation, etc. Eating a healthy, balanced diet can control symptoms. Below are suggested diets for people with hypothyroidism.

Paleo Diet

Processed foods, high in salt, increase the risk of inflammation, affecting the thyroid gland and thyroid cells, leading to hypothyroidism. The Paleo diet limits salt, dairy products, refined sugar, processed foods, grains (rice, corn, beans...) which can cause inflammation.

People who follow this diet prioritize lean meat, fish, vegetables and fruits. They also contain antioxidants that help reduce inflammation in the body. The Paleo diet limits dairy, which can affect the calcium needed for bones. Patients can eat calcium-rich foods such as sardines, broccoli... to provide enough calcium and vitamin D.

Mediterranean Diet

This diet prioritizes plant-based foods, fish and other seafood, whole grains, fruits, nuts, beans, healthy fats (olive oil, avocados). These foods have anti-inflammatory properties, which are beneficial for the thyroid. Limiting red meat, dairy, and processed foods when following the Mediterranean diet reduces inflammation.

Low glycemic diet

People who follow this diet often prioritize fruits, vegetables and whole grains, foods that have little impact on blood sugar levels. High blood sugar stimulates cortisol production and increases inflammation, which is bad for people with hypothyroidism. Foods rich in refined carbohydrates, high in sugar such as white bread, white rice, pasta... should be avoided because they increase blood sugar.

Gluten-free diet

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition that often occurs in people with hypothyroidism. Autoimmune thyroid disease and hypothyroidism are also more common in people with celiac disease. A gluten-free diet is suitable for people with celiac disease and gluten sensitivity.

This diet does not prioritize foods containing gluten, prioritizes healthier foods such as fruits, vegetables and lean proteins, which are good for disease management. Patients can supplement calcium, iron, fiber and essential minerals through eggs, milk, carrots, sweet potatoes, green leafy vegetables, and beans.

Diet is only a supportive method, not a substitute for medical treatment. Patients need to follow the treatment plan, consult a doctor before applying the diet.
