BTO- On the afternoon of May 22, the Binh Thuan Department of Health announced: A 63-year-old male patient in Lien Huong town (Tuy Phong) died of suspected rabies.
Six months ago, the patient was bitten by a domestic dog, causing a shallow wound on the back of the left hand, with little bleeding. The patient treated the wound with soap, but did not get a rabies vaccine or anti-rabies serum. On May 5, 2023, while at sea, the patient felt muscle pain, leg pain, and restlessness. On May 12, the patient had a headache, mild convulsions, was afraid of water, afraid of wind, and tired, and did not take any medication.
On May 15, after reaching shore, the patient was admitted to Binh Thuan General Hospital, with a suspected diagnosis of rabies. On the same day, the patient was transferred to the Ho Chi Minh City Tropical Diseases Hospital. The saliva sample test result was positive for rabies. On May 17, the family asked to take the patient home and the patient died on the same day.
According to epidemiological investigation, the dog was not vaccinated against rabies and died 2 days after biting the patient. 2 days before biting the patient, 3 domestic dogs were bitten by stray dogs. Afterwards, all 3 dogs showed symptoms of depression and died.
It is known that the Provincial Center for Disease Control reported the outbreak of animal-to-human transmission to the provincial veterinary agency for coordination in investigation and monitoring. Tuy Phong Medical Center conducted investigation and monitoring of the rabies death case, the patient's family and relatives. At the same time, propaganda and mobilization of relatives who were scratched by rabid dogs to get rabies vaccination; as well as consulting on rabies preventive treatment for people who have contact with open wounds or mucous membranes exposed to the patient's saliva.
