People coming to Ngoc Hoang Pagoda to perform the ceremony must register before Lunar New Year for a fee of 600,000 VND/worship. On the day of the ceremony, they must be present from 7:30 am and start walking 3 laps around the temple yard to the chanting of monks.

Ms. Vo Thi Hoang (living in District 1) goes to Ngoc Hoang Pagoda every year to perform the fortune-telling ceremony. This is the 7th year she has performed this ritual. “In Ho Chi Minh City, only this pagoda offers fortune-telling ceremonies. About a week before Tet, I come to register, then the pagoda gives me a slip to schedule the worship date. On the day, I come to give the slip back and receive the offering tray. If my family members do not attend, they have to write their names, bring their clothes for the monk to stamp and ask for blessings after the fortune-telling ceremony,” Ms. Hoang shared.

The offering tray on the head includes: lucky money envelopes, cakes, candies, clothes... After going around 3 times, people will stand under the flagpole, waiting for the monks to stamp the offering on their hands or foreheads.

The first time she performed a fortune-changing ceremony, Ms. Dao Nghi (living in Binh Thanh District) said: “I have to come to this pagoda at least once a year. Today is the second time this year I have come to the pagoda. Today I come to pray for fortune-changing, to change my fate. For example, last year my fate was not good, when I come here the monks will pray for me to change my fate.”

“The main thing is still health and peace, then wealth. Any amount is fine, but the most important thing is still your health, that is the happiest thing. As for money, it still depends on each person's ability. If your ability is good, you can earn a lot of money, if not, you can earn a little money, as long as you are peaceful,” said Ms. Nhu Hoa, the person who performed the fortune-changing ceremony.

After the ceremony team enters to stamp the seal, the worshiper is instructed by the temple on how to give lucky money to their children and grandchildren, noting that the children and grandchildren should keep it until the end of the year before spending it. As for the clothes that are stamped, people can use and wash them normally.

Ngoc Hoang Pagoda, also known as Ngoc Hoang Temple (Phuoc Hai Tu), is located at 73 Mai Thi Luu Street, District 1. This is an ancient temple with attractive beauty. The temple was built in the early 20th century by a Chinese man named Luu Minh, whose pen name is Luu Dao Nguyen. Initially, this was a temple to worship the Jade Emperor. In 1982, it was taken over by monk Thich Vinh Khuong and officially under the management of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha. In 1984, the temple was renamed Phuoc Hai Tu.
