According to TASS news agency, on February 7, speaking at a meeting, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin cited data from the Rosstat statistics agency saying that the country's economy grew 4.1% in 2024, the same as in 2023.
Prime Minister Mitshustin reported the above achievements to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Mr. Putin highly appreciated this result and instructed the Prime Minister to control the rising prices.
"The task this year is to achieve more balanced growth and reduce inflation," the Kremlin leader said.
Russia’s sharp increase in spending on soldiers and weapons has helped the country defy predictions of a deep recession after it launched its military campaign in Ukraine in February 2022. However, rapid growth has caused high inflation and severe labor shortages at home, worrying Moscow.
Agreeing with the Russian President, Prime Minister Mishustin affirmed: "It is clear that the main challenge is inflation", which was 9.5% last year.
Soaring prices for staples have dominated Russian media in recent months. The price of butter is expected to rise 36% by 2024, while overall food prices are expected to rise more than 11%, according to statistics agency Rosstat.
The price increase comes as Russian state spending has increased rapidly amid the special military operation in Ukraine. This year, spending is expected to be two-thirds higher than in 2021, before Moscow launched its special military operation in Ukraine.
