Speaking at the opening of the session, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk expressed concern about the escalating violence in eastern DRC, warning of consequences not only for local people but also for the entire region.

He called on the parties involved to stop fighting, resume dialogue, step up efforts to prevent conflicts and support peace processes.

The official also stressed the importance of upholding international human rights and humanitarian law.

Meanwhile, UN human rights experts have also expressed concern about the safety and living conditions of displaced civilians in eastern DR Congo, where fierce fighting is taking place between the M23 armed group and the army.

Last week, M23 fighters and Rwandan troops seized Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, a mineral-rich region that has been ravaged by war for more than three decades, and are now advancing into South Kivu.

Latest figures show that violence has displaced at least 700,000 people, killed at least 900 people and injured about 2,000 in the city of Goma and surrounding areas since the beginning of this year.

At the session, the 47 member states of the UN Human Rights Council unanimously adopted a resolution ordering an investigation, demanding that M23 withdraw from occupied areas and that Rwandan troops withdraw from the territory of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The resolution calls for measures to stop "the illegal exploitation of natural resources" in the region, and "strongly condemns Rwanda's military and logistical support" to M23, demanding that the two forces "immediately cease their human rights violations".

The council also demanded that militants “immediately cease all hostilities and withdraw from occupied areas”, while urging them to ensure unhindered access to humanitarian aid.

Meanwhile, Ambassador James Ngango - Head of the Rwandan delegation in Geneva (Switzerland) - said that his country was not responsible for the unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo and claimed to have evidence of "an imminent large-scale attack on Rwanda".

Additionally, Mr. Ngango said, Rwanda is committed to resolving the conflict through political dialogue and “there are lies being spread that mineral resources are the cause.”
