Son Doong Cave

Son Doong is the largest cave in the world. The cave was discovered by Mr. Ho Khanh, a Phong Nha native, in 1990 and in 2009, it was surveyed and measured by a British-Vietnamese cave exploration team. In 2013, Son Doong was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the largest natural cave in the world.

Son Doong Cave has a total length of nearly 9 km, a wide cave dome, and a volume of 38.5 million m3. The cave contains many stalactites of enormous size (over 80 m high), a growing primeval forest, its own ecosystem, weather, and underground river.

The Son Doong Cave Exploration Tour is operated as an adventure tour with a duration of 6 days and 5 nights, sold since 2013 and is always fully booked a year in advance. The photo above is Dinosaur Watch at Sinkholes 1 of Son Doong Cave. Photo: Oxalis
