According to the Management Board of Xuan Lien Nature Reserve (located in Thuong Xuan district, Thanh Hoa province), the project to investigate and conserve rare wild birds has discovered 252 rare bird species belonging to 55 families and 17 orders.
The Management Board of Xuan Lien Nature Reserve, Thuong Xuan District, Thanh Hoa Province is implementing the scientific project "Investigation and conservation of rare and endangered bird species in Xuan Lien Nature Reserve (2016-2018 period), Thuong Xuan District, Thanh Hoa Province" to determine the quantity and habitat of wild birds to preserve the original state of bird species.
Up to now, within the framework of the project, 252 rare bird species belonging to 55 families and 17 orders have been discovered; of which the family Khuoc has the most with 29 species; the family Dop Ruoi has 15 species; there are 5 rare and endangered bird species listed in the Vietnam Red Book such as white pheasant (Lophura nycthemera); golden pheasant (Polyplectron bicalcaratum); hornbill (Buceros bicornis); brown thrush (anorrhinus tickelli); long-billed babbler (jabouilleia danjoui) ...
Mr. Do Ngoc Duong, Deputy Director of Xuan Lien Nature Reserve Management Board (Thanh Hoa province) said that Xuan Lien Nature Reserve has rugged terrain, rocky mountain ranges divided by deep valleys, limited land for cultivation and production, and people's lives still face many difficulties, having to rely on forest resources.
Illegal exploitation and hunting of rare animals and plants occurs continuously, especially rare birds. Many people use homemade guns and traps to hunt birds.
Traps are often placed by people along trails to catch birds that forage and move on the ground, such as chickens and pheasants.

Foresters also regularly catch newly hatched nests of starlings, turtle doves, and quail, bringing them home to raise and then sell for profit.
In addition to illegal hunting of rare birds, many people also destroy forests and graze livestock in the forests, seriously threatening the lives of rare birds. Therefore, the implementation of the above project will help protect rare birds in a timely manner.
According to Mr. Do Ngoc Duong, in the past time, the Management Board of Xuan Lien Nature Reserve has investigated the current status, composition, and distribution characteristics of bird species on 15 routes; conducted research and synthesized biological, ecological, and behavioral characteristics of many bird species; used the method of synthesizing and inheriting documents, identifying, and interviewing people in villages and hamlets in the buffer zone of the reserve about the number, distribution, and current status of rare and endangered bird species; recorded bird species that have appeared in Xuan Lien forests.
In the coming time, the Management Board of Xuan Lien Nature Reserve (Thuong Xuan district, Thanh Hoa province) will continue to develop a program to monitor rare bird species; strengthen inspection and prevention of hunting, protect the habitat of birds; propagate and raise awareness among people about biodiversity protection, bird conservation in 11 villages and hamlets in communes around the reserve and collect information on bird species in the form of tapes, discs, documents; at the same time, coordinate with universities and research institutes to plan and build experimental forests associated with conservation, training, scientific research and build tourist routes to watch birds in the reserve, contributing to the protection of biodiversity in Xuan Lien Nature Reserve.
