Education for sustainable development equips learners of all ages with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to address intertwined global challenges including climate change, biodiversity loss, unsustainable resource use, inequality…
Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Phuc said the Vietnamese Government has had many policies and activities to improve the quality of education and training such as reforming general education; innovating the curriculum; building advanced universities towards regional and world standards; supporting education for the poor, mountainous and remote areas; and enhancing international cooperation in the fields of education and science and technology.
However, according to Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Phuc, more needs to be done to make education truly a driving force for sustainable development.
In order to implement Vietnam's commitment at the UNESCO International Conference on Education for Sustainable Development, in 2021, the Ministry of Education and Training took steps to develop a national initiative on education for sustainable development by 2030, as a general overarching strategy on education for sustainable development with the aim of strengthening current efforts and promoting coordination, towards nationwide impact.
The Deputy Minister of Education and Training also emphasized that sustainable development is not only about economic and social development and protecting the ecological environment, but also ensuring basic human needs, in which development for human happiness is what humanity is aiming for and will be set for the future.
The Deputy Minister said that in education, the issue of developing happiness is very important and needs to solve three problems, which are the relationship between people, between people and nature and the relationship with oneself. Therefore, currently, the Ministry of Education and Training is effectively implementing the program "Happy School".
UNESCO representative, Ms. Miki Nozawa, Head of Education Department, UNESCO Hanoi, said that Vietnam is one of the pioneering countries in declaring its commitment to implementing the new global framework on education for sustainable development 2030 at the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development held in May 2021 in Germany.
“We are here because of our shared concern about the sustainability challenges facing our planet, and the urgency for increased action,” said Miki Nozawa.
And I believe in the power of education to change the way we act. Education for sustainable development is more important than ever. We are delighted that the Ministry of Education and Training has initiated and is ready to participate in this process.”

At the Workshop, the participants provided their comments on the Status Report on Education for Sustainable Development in Vietnam and the draft “National Initiative on Education for Sustainable Development” and identified and agreed on the next steps for the national ESD 2030 strategy and cross-sectoral coordination in this common effort until 2030.
According to the Ministry of Education and Training, sustainable development education is a very broad field, so it requires the mobilization of relevant parties for sustainable and effective implementation activities.
Sustainable development education initiatives will be feasible and effective when there is support and participation from relevant parties, such as the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment; Ministry of Planning and Investment; Ministry of Science and Technology; Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs... and other relevant ministries and sectors.
In addition, it is necessary to coordinate with organizations, especially non-governmental organizations, businesses and local communities in activities, especially in large-scale activities of national strategic importance.
The “National Initiative for Education for Sustainable Development 2030” was initiated and promoted by UNESCO worldwide, especially in countries and territories at high risk of being affected by climate change and extreme weather. According to UNESCO's World Education Report 2020, Vietnam is one of the countries with the greatest progress in achieving the United Nations' global education goals. Vietnam is also one of the countries with the highest results in the 2018 PISA exam. |
