Why are people born in the year of the Snake less numerous than those born in other years?

Remember 2 years ago, everyone was hunting for golden cats and golden dragons, but this year there is no definition of hunting for golden snakes. So why are there fewer people born in the year of the Snake than other years? Is it because people born in the year of the Snake are less lucky?

In Asian culture, specifically in countries that still celebrate Lunar New Year, people born in the year of the Snake will be unlucky.

In China, whether superstitious or not, many parents go to great lengths to have a child or two in the Year of the Dragon. It is believed that those born in this zodiac year will develop power and greatness – qualities that the mythical beast is said to possess.

As a result, more births are recorded in China during the Year of the Dragon than any other year. However, giving birth in the Year of the Snake can be considered undesirable, as the reptile is often associated with evil in Chinese mythology.

Internet users on Chinese social media platforms such as Weibo spread negative information that children born in the Year of the Snake are traditionally considered "debt collectors" rather than "repayers of gratitude".

It is said that people born in the year of the Snake not only do not have the ability to bring good luck but can also increase the family's financial challenges and difficulties.

In Chinese culture, snakes are often associated with cunning, deceit, and danger. In many legends and fairy tales, snakes are considered villains. This directly affects the views of the Snake, especially when it comes to having children, as everyone wishes their children to be born under a good zodiac sign.

One person commented on social media: “Although I want to have a child as soon as possible, I still avoid giving birth in the Year of the Snake.”

"The snake always makes a sound that is not as beautiful as the dragon and does not symbolize luck like the horse. I am afraid my child will have bad luck" - Another person said.

However, snakes are not always considered bad. For some people, they are a welcome symbol.

A user of Xiaohongshu - an Instagram-like platform in mainland China - said that snakes can be seen as a symbol of intelligence and wisdom, and that people born in the year of the Snake are often wise, insightful and ambitious.

Many people born in the year of the Snake have achieved extraordinary success, such as American singer Taylor Swift and Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng...

Additionally, thanks to the lower birth rate in this zodiac year, some believe that children born in the year of the Snake face less competition as they grow up and have easier access to educational resources.

However, while traditional Chinese culture and folk beliefs - important factors in maintaining contemporary culture - contribute to people's desire to have or not have children in the Year of the Snake, children's prospects depend more on their parents' education and their own efforts than on the zodiac sign of the year they were born.
