About Nghi Xuan heritage area

On the map of Vietnam, the Lam River is like a green silk strip running through the two provinces of Nghe An and Ha Tinh. On the southern bank and also the northern tip of Ha Tinh, where the river winds along the Hong Linh mountain range, the Nghi Xuan land has been green with vitality for thousands of years, sparkling with cultural layers under the shadow of time.

Although I have been here countless times, on this Thanh Minh festival, returning to the hometown of Nguyen Tien Dien, the emotions well up in me like the waves of Lam River hitting the shore. Standing in front of the Nguyen Du relic site in Tien Dien town, looking towards Giang Dinh wharf, the verses of the Great Poet echo as if reminding me of a soul that lives forever with the source of the homeland: The old fox remembers the days/ Horses and carts roaming this riverbank (Giang Dinh Huu Cam). During the exciting years of his youth, he once called himself "Hong Son Liep Ho", "Nam Hai Dieu Do" (hunter on Hong mountain, fisherman in the South sea) and led the men of Tien Dien conical hat quarter to cross Hong mountain to sing with the girls of Truong Luu fabric quarter. He once exclaimed "Lam thuy Hong son vo han thang!" (Hong mountain, Lam river, the scenery is extremely beautiful!). With great talent, his soul always attached to the mountains and rivers of his homeland, to human life, his works, especially The Tale of Kieu, made Nguyen Du a famous person admired by the world.

Nguyen Du's pride in his ancestral homeland is also the pride of many generations of Nghi Xuan people, past and present, in this ancient land with its special mountains and rivers. Archaeological sites in Bai Coi, Phoi Phoi (Xuan Vien), Xuan An, Hoi Thong show that people settled here very early. During the Van Lang - Au Lac period, Nghi Xuan belonged to Cuu Duc department; during the Northern domination period, it was Ham Hoan, Duong Thanh, Duong Thoai, Pho Duong; during the Ly dynasty, it was called Nha Nghi district. In the year Ky Suu 1469, King Le Thanh Tong re-defined the map of the whole country, the name Nghi Xuan district has existed since that time.

With a terrain bordered on three sides by rivers, mountains and the sea, Nghi Xuan is located entirely in the sacred land of Hong Mountain and Lam River, the cultural symbol of Nghe An. To the north of the district is Lam River (also known as Ca River), the clear blue water contains many historical imprints, the origin of the Lam River Vi verse, a type of folk art performance in Vi and Giam that was honored by UNESCO as a representative intangible heritage of humanity. To the south and southwest is the Hong Linh range, which is said to have 99 overlapping peaks with many famous relics. To the east of the district is Cua Hoi, where Lam River flows into the vast East Sea. There is "Song Ngu Hy Thuy" (2 Song Ngu islands are likened to a pair of fish playing in the water), one of the famous "Nghi Xuan Bat Canh". Hoi Thong ancient village has "Dan Nhai quy pham" (sail to Dan Nhai seaport, also known as Cua Hoi), a famous ancient trading port that once had many foreign ships coming and going to trade, leaving behind many archaeological sites and traces of the ancient maritime silk road.

The sacred land gave birth to outstanding people; the mountains, the rivers and the cultural traditions of Nghi Xuan have created families of scholars, many famous people, who have contributed to the cause of governing the country and saving the world. In addition to the great poet Nguyen Du, there are also Dinh Dien Su, poet Nguyen Cong Tru; the holy master of geography Ta Ao; Doctor Ngu Khac Tuan; patriot Trinh Khac Lap; martyr Le Duy Diem, Professor Ha Van Tan...

Arriving at Nghi Xuan today, our car followed the coastal highway, passing through ancient villages that are shining with the youthful vitality of the new rural construction. Cuong Gian reminds us of the rich taste of delicious fish sauce drops. There now appears Phu Minh Gia resort on the side of the road with new check-in spots. Co Dam echoes with the sound of Ca Tru, reminding us of Mrs. Mon, Mrs. Nga and the female students who are passionate about preserving heritage. Xuan Thanh is modern and poetic with a system of hotels and resorts that are attracting and inviting tourists such as Hoa Tien Paradise, golf course, dog racing track, clear blue beach with a river flowing on the shore reflecting the rows of hundred-year-old coconut trees.

On this occasion, the whole district is eagerly preparing for the opening ceremony of Ha Tinh sea tourism in Xuan Thanh and Nguyen Du Culture - Tourism Week. The sea is even more bustling. The ca tru, vi giam and Kieu plays have more opportunities to resound far and wide.

Places such as Cho Cui Temple, Phong Phan Pagoda, Com Mountain, Lach Wharf, Nguyen Du Relic Site, Hoi Thong Communal House, Nguyen Cong Tru Church, Nguyen Xi Church, Huyen Temple... forever shine with traces of history and culture. Truc Lam Hong Linh Zen Monastery in Xuan Vien is being gradually completed. Nguyen Du Relic Site has been upgraded and invested in, attracting more and more domestic and foreign tourists. The Co Dam Ca Tru, Kieu plays, Vi and Giam songs resonate more and more over time, stirring people's hearts... The massive tangible heritage system with more than 60 provincial, national and special national level relics on this land and 2 representative intangible heritages of humanity (Ca Tru, Vi and Giam) are precious gems that shine more and more.

Resolution No. 93/2018/NQ-HDND of the Provincial People's Council on "Preserving and promoting the cultural heritage values ​​of Nghe Tinh folk songs, Giam, Ca Tru, Truyen Kieu, Phuc Giang School Woodblocks, Hoang Hoa Su Trinh Do for the period 2018-2025 and the following years" clearly stated specific goals. Along with the goals, the resolution also sets out specific tasks, solutions and many mechanisms and preferential policies for preservation. Specifically: supporting 100% of training costs, improving knowledge for singers, musicians, and artists in the field of Ca Tru and Kieu; supporting the launch cost of 30 million VND and maintaining the operation of 5 million VND/year for Vi and Giam folk song clubs; supporting each newly established Ca Tru and Kieu club with 100 million VND and 30 million VND/year/club for each following year if the activities are practical and sustainable. In addition, since 2019, ca tru, folk song, vi, giam, and kieu artists who have been awarded the title of meritorious artists and people's artists with difficult circumstances have been supported by the province with 1-1.5 million VND/month, respectively.

In addition to the province's general policy, to "nurture" the clubs and "warm up" the enthusiasm of the artisans, Nghi Xuan district also issued its own support policy. Resolution 134/NQ-HDND of the district People's Council stipulates that support for ca tru and Kieu clubs that contribute products and operate effectively is 50 million VND/club/year; for excellent artisans and folk artists who contribute products and operate effectively for the local movement is 6 million VND/person/year.

Since the Resolution 93 of the Provincial People's Council and the "stimulus" policy of Nghi Xuan district, folk art clubs have been vibrant and active. The clubs have invested in musical instruments, and artisans have enthusiastically practiced and taught young people. The movement of singing ca tru in and out of schools has developed very well. The province-wide ca tru festival held in Nghi Xuan in 2021 was a great success. New types of performances of Truyen Kieu have emerged such as hat vi, giam Kieu, xam Kieu, chau van Kieu, ca tru Kieu, deeply imbuing the values ​​of Truyen Kieu in the hearts of the people. In particular, with the criterion: 100% of communes and towns have folk song clubs, Nghi Xuan has revived and developed folk song types vi, giam, ca tru, tro Kieu... creating a "land of singing" that cannot be confused with anywhere else.

Mr. Phan Tan Linh - Secretary of Nghi Xuan District Party Committee said: “Understanding the advantages of the heritage area, along with planning urban areas associated with tourism, Nghi Xuan has built and had the Prime Minister approve the Project "Building Nghi Xuan district to meet the standards of a typical model new rural district in terms of culture associated with tourism development in the period 2021-2025". Accordingly, new rural tourism, experiential tourism, and cultural tourism have more opportunities to develop. In the coming time, we will strengthen the work of preserving and promoting heritage, bringing Nghi Xuan cultural heritage to visitors from near and far and attracting tourists to this charming land".
