Urgent "renovation" of Ke Go Lake after nearly 50 years of exploitation

These days, the construction teams of the joint venture of Construction Joint Stock Company 47 - Lilama 10 Joint Stock Company and Construction Joint Stock Company 465 are simultaneously implementing the construction of upgrading and repairing items of Ke Go Lake (Cam My Commune, Cam Xuyen District).

At the new construction area of ​​the flood spillway - a project to upgrade and repair Ke Go lake, excavators, bulldozers, and trucks are busy working.

Currently, the contractor is focusing on digging the foundation pit. If the construction goes well, the concrete pouring can begin about 1 month later. A new overpass bridge will also be built in this area.

At this time, Ha Tinh is experiencing widespread heat, the outdoor temperature is high but the workers are still working hard.

About 50m away is the construction area for upgrading and repairing the main dam of Ke Go Lake. Currently, the contractor has basically completed the removal of weathered soil and started the work of reinforcing the main dam.

The water level in Ke Go Lake is quite high. To ensure safety for the project and construction, the contractor has installed a water collection pipe system to limit water seepage through the main dam body.

Although the amount of water seeping through the main dam body is small, all of it flows into the pipeline and then drains out, so it almost does not affect the construction.

The main dam body will be filled with thicker soil than at present, contributing to ensuring the safety of Ke Go reservoir, especially during the rainy season when the water level in the reservoir increases.

The dam crest will also be widened from 6m to 10m. There is currently a concrete road on top of the dam. With the dam crest widened, this road will also be wider, contributing to facilitating the movement of people and vehicles, especially in handling incidents if any.

Along with the construction of a new spillway; repairing and upgrading the main dam, the Doc Mieu spillway area is also being repaired and upgraded. Doc Mieu spillway is the main spillway of Ke Go Lake. After many years of exploitation and operation, the spillway has shown signs of deterioration. Repairing and upgrading is extremely necessary.

The Ke Go Lake upgrade and repair project has a capital of more than 350 billion VND from the central budget. The scale includes: Repairing and upgrading the main dam, auxiliary dams 1 and 2, Doc Mieu spillway, water intake, Doc Mieu spillway management and operation building and behind the main dam; building a new flood spillway.

The project is invested by the Irrigation Investment and Construction Management Board 4 ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ). The joint venture of Joint Stock Company 47 - Joint Stock Company Lilama 10 - Joint Stock Company 465 Construction is the construction unit.

Mr. Nguyen Van Son - Deputy Director of the Irrigation Investment and Construction Management Board 4 said: The project will be implemented in December 2024 and is expected to be completed after 18 months. However, at the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025, Ha Tinh often had rains, which affected the construction process. By the end of March, when the weather was favorable, the unit requested the contractor to increase manpower and construction machinery to "compensate" for the previous progress.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Son, the current weather, although hot, is favorable for the construction process. To ensure the health of workers, the contractor proactively adjusted the construction time, starting the morning shift at 5am and ending at 10:30am the same day, and the afternoon shift from 3pm to 7pm. There are days when the work is carried out until late at night.

According to Mr. Son, up to this point, the construction output of the entire project has reached 15% of the contract value.

The investor requires the contractor to take advantage of favorable weather to speed up the construction progress, trying to complete the critical road items before the 2025 flood season begins. Despite the progress requirements, it is always necessary to ensure technical safety during construction and quality for the project.

After nearly 50 years of exploitation and operation, many key construction items of Ke Go Reservoir (Cam Xuyen District, Ha Tinh Province) have degraded and been damaged. This situation affects the operation process as well as potentially causes safety risks for the project.

Faced with that situation, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, decided to implement a project to upgrade and repair Ke Go Lake with a total investment of 350 billion VND to ensure the safety of the dam.

The Ke Go Lake upgrading and repair project will meet the goals and tasks of Vietnam's irrigation development strategy, contributing to ensuring drainage, preventing flooding, protecting the ecological environment, proactively preventing and mitigating damage caused by water. At the same time, it will contribute to ensuring drainage, preventing flooding, protecting the ecological environment; better serving agricultural production and helping people in the downstream areas feel secure during the rainy season.
