(Dan Tri) - With its pristine natural scenery and magnificent cave system, Tan Hoa is an ideal destination for tourists. Recently, Tan Hoa was also voted the best tourist village in the world in 2023.
Tan Hoa is a remote commune of Minh Hoa district, Quang Binh province, located between limestone mountains, with Rao Nan river flowing through, home to more than 3,000 people.
In the past, Tan Hoa people lived on the forest, farming, raising livestock... life faced many difficulties because of its remote location. Tan Hoa is located in a basin, which is considered a "water valley", a "flood navel", many times, floods submerged most of the houses in Tan Hoa.
In the past, during flood season, people in Tan Hoa commune had to run up the mountain to set up tents and stretch tarps to take shelter. After the historic flood of 2010, people in Tan Hoa had the initiative to make rafts to "live with the flood".
Each raft consists of 10-20 empty barrels, when the water level rises, the raft will float with the water. From experience through years of flooding, people have improved the raft into a floating house, with a roof, walls to protect from the sun and rain, fixed through 4 poles at the 4 corners.
In this floating house, people can live normally, living with the rain and floods. As of 2023, Tan Hoa commune has nearly 620 floating houses, ensuring that 100% of households can adapt, be safe and live with floods. All 620 floating houses are 100% funded by organizations, individuals and benefactors for construction.
The lives of Tan Hoa people today are adapting to the weather and they live peacefully with the floods. When the rainy season comes, they store enough food and clean water on their floating houses for 7-10 days. There is no longer the scene of running away from the flood or waiting for relief when the flood comes like in previous years.
Although it is a flood-prone area, Tan Hoa has a charming landscape, with limestone mountains overlapping each other, embracing the vast valley and endless grasslands. Cutting across the valley is a gentle, emerald green river, flanked by green cornfields and rice fields.
The road to Tan Hoa winds around the foot of the mountain, where there are houses with the wild, simple beauty of the peaceful countryside. Along with that is the Tu Lan valley with long grasslands, adorned by the soft Rao Nan river, beautiful as a watercolor painting.
Coming to Tan Hoa, visitors can not only admire the wild beauty of the peaceful countryside but also explore the Tu Lan cave system consisting of 10 different caves with a beautiful, magical stalactite system.
As a land with pristine natural scenery, Tan Hoa is gradually becoming an ideal destination for tourists, especially international visitors.
In Tan Hoa, in 2011, when the Tu Lan cave system was put into trial tourism exploitation and officially operated in 2014. People previously lived on farming and hunting wild animals, now gradually switched to tourism.
There are hundreds of people directly involved in serving tourists exploring the Tu Lan cave system.
Also here, in early 2016, a film crew from the world's film capital Hollywood filmed some important scenes for the blockbuster "Kong: Skull Island". In 2018, director Victor Vu also chose Tan Hoa for the filming of the movie "The Immortal".
In order to gradually turn Tan Hoa from a "flood center" into a key tourist center in the northwest of Quang Binh, in recent years, the local government and the tourism industry of this province have coordinated to build a step-by-step solid development strategy for Tan Hoa.
Tan Hoa is currently oriented to develop according to the model of a tourist village that adapts to the weather, providing diverse experiences for tourism from homestay, farming experience, dining at local houses, souvenir stalls and other diverse services for tourists.
By participating in tourism activities, Tan Hoa people have gradually mastered the services they provide to tourists. Tourism products in Tan Hoa such as: exploring the Tu Lan cave system, driving off-road vehicles to explore the ironwood forest, cycling to explore corn fields and many other services have also gradually diversified to attract tourists.
Besides the cultural, historical and natural beauty values, Tan Hoa people also have a very unique culinary culture such as rice, snails, and ca lao, promising to bring interesting experiences to tourists.
As a tourist village that adapts to the weather, many people in Tan Hoa have cooperated with travel companies to build homestays based on the floating house model. When floods occur in Tan Hoa, the homestays will float up so that tourists can live normally.
This is an opportunity for visitors to experience local life on floating houses, admiring the beautiful natural landscape that can only be seen on flood days.
According to Mr. Ho An Phong, Vice Chairman of Quang Binh Provincial People's Committee, Tan Hoa has created a new type of tourism - tourism that adapts to the weather. The model of floating houses to avoid floods in Tan Hoa is becoming a unique accommodation model. This is how Tan Hoa people turn disadvantages into sustainable livelihoods on the path of conquering nature, connecting with nature, with the rustic and peaceful countryside.
