BIM application, optimizing Quang Ngai expressway progress

Báo Giao thôngBáo Giao thông27/09/2024

In late September 2024, nearly 4,000 personnel, nearly 1,800 locomotives and equipment spread across 50 construction sites were still working hard to speed up the North-South expressway project, Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon section, to finish early.

A representative of Deo Ca Group (the leading unit of the consortium) said that they are determined to complete the project by the end of 2025, 8 months ahead of the original plan. In addition to maintaining "3 shifts, 4 crews" construction, the contractor is promoting the application of technology, especially BIM technology, to optimize progress and time.

"Right from the beginning, the project management board cooperated with consulting units to deploy digital technology applications to enhance project management in all 3 bid packages (XL1, XL2 and XL3).

The results of monitoring the application of BIM by the Ministry of Construction in the period of 2017-2021 show that BIM contributes to shortening the time (from 12-15%) and improving the quality of design, construction and management of construction investment projects (saving project costs up to 12% compared to the approved schedule).

Implementing the Prime Minister's direction, determined to pioneer the application of BIM in the Group's activities, Deo Ca has established the Research & Application Center (BIM).

In addition to internal activities, the work on the project site has applied digital technology such as: survey, design, construction, supervision, management starting with investment in machinery and equipment, training human resources and building operating procedures.

The contractor used UAV LIDAR to scan the current 3D laser, process point cloud survey data to build the current surface and determine the design scope.

With the collected Point Cloud data, millions of data points will be recorded from the surface of objects in the environment, then create a "cloud" of points in 3D space, creating a digital model of the current status of the project, supporting site clearance, designing construction drawings, reviewing design documents, building models...", Deo Ca representative informed.

Also according to the contractor representative, the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon project is currently implementing the EIR (Employer's Information Requirements) and BEP (BIM Execution Plan) processes at about 50% of the volume.

The management board has selected a number of segments to implement detailed BIM at different levels. The tunnel entrance and square slopes, reinforced concrete of the tunnel, reinforcement arrangement for beams, pillars, bridge abutments, etc. are designed in 3D models for each structure.

Thanks to this visual model, stakeholders can easily understand the design and detect errors early, minimizing design errors, avoiding repairs during construction, saving time and costs.

It is impossible to tangibly measure how much money digital technology applications bring in at a time. In the general context of the 4.0 technology era, only digital technology applications can help businesses expand their operations, solve existing problems, promote business development and keep up with trends.

Mr. Le Quynh Mai, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Deo Ca Group

After the design is completed, the BIM of each segment and item will be coordinated with each other. BIM also supports the detection of conflicts between the components of the project, such as collisions between pipes and structural beams, etc.

BIM also serves as a common data platform to enable the integration of all design, structural, mechanical, electrical, and engineering systems data into a single 3D model.

Design teams of different categories work together to increase design consistency. Other information and documents such as acceptance reports are also integrated into the model to facilitate implementation monitoring.

From the BIM model, it is possible to extract the required quantity of materials and the amount of work to be performed, supporting better cost management and accurately forecasting resource requirements for the project, minimizing the risk of unexpected costs, increasing the feasibility and financial efficiency of the project.

"BIM also supports the design and description of construction methods, improved construction methods at tunnel No. 2 are simulated in 3D for each stage such as drilling and blasting, explosive installation, drilling and chiseling, earth and rock transportation, etc.

According to the plan, the BIM progress of package XL1 will be completed on June 30, 2025, package XL2 will be completed on August 31, 2025 and package XL3 will be completed on December 31, 2025," said a representative of Deo Ca Group.
