R A QUAN SMOOTHLY
U.23 Vietnam has a favorable schedule when facing U.23 Guam in the opening match of the 2024 U.23 Asian qualifiers. Against an opponent that is rated much lower and with home field advantage, coach Philippe Troussier still uses the 3-4-3 formation and puts on the field a squad with a framework of outstanding factors, in which Tuan Tai plays as a center back to make way for Minh Trong on the left wing, and midfielder Duc Phu, who usually plays as a center, is brought to the right wing.
Facing the stronger U.23 VN, it is understandable that U.23 Guam chose to play defensively. Although coach Philippe Troussier's team completely controlled the game, they played quite deadlocked for about 2/3 of the first half. In fact, the quality of U.23 VN's passes in the first 45 minutes of play was not high. The triangle and pass-and-go combinations in the middle area were quite rare. The finishing was also not really effective when the strikers were still tense, in which Van Tung did not have the best ball feeling. On the right wing, Thanh Nhan and Duc Phu, although teammates at PVF-CAND Club, did not have good connection.
Thanh Nhan was one of the most outstanding players of U.23 Vietnam in the victory over U.23 Guam.
It was not until the 33rd minute that the home team broke the deadlock thanks to Le Van Do. However, the opening goal also had a strong personal mark, when Thanh Nhan ran and accelerated strongly down the sideline and then crossed for Van Do to easily tap the ball in. In the second half, coach Philippe Troussier sent out good players, when Ho Van Cuong entered the field to run on the right wing, while Duc Phu was returned to the center of midfield. Khuat Van Khang replaced Minh Trong on the left wing. From then on, U.23 Vietnam played better than in the first 45 minutes. The players and lines were cohesive and the attacking options also became more diverse, in order to find goals.
Young Vietnamese players try very hard
The second goal came from Nguyen Van Tung's penalty kick at the beginning of the second half. Ho Van Cuong deepened the gap to 3-0 in the 68th minute. Thanh Nhan's tricky header raised the score to 4-0 (79th minute). Hoang Van Toan scored the 5th goal, before Vi Hao sealed the 6-0 victory for U.23 Vietnam from the 11m mark at the end of the match.
"Against an opponent who only knows how to play to break the ball, the favorite team will face many difficulties, especially in the first half. U.23 Vietnam played at a satisfactory level, because the first matches are always not smooth. The decisive passes are still not highly accurate and are a bit perfectionist," commented commentator Vu Quang Huy.
COMPLETE TESTING FOR THE HINGE MATCH
Commentator Vu Quang Huy expressed his opinion: "Perhaps facing an opponent that is not highly rated like U.23 Guam, Coach Troussier wants to take advantage of this opportunity to continue to conduct experiments and make assessments. In the near future, U.23 Vietnam may have the best lineup."
With a 6-0 victory over U.23 Guam, U.23 Vietnam temporarily leads Group C with 3 points (goal difference +6), U.23 Yemen ranks second (3 points, goal difference +3). U.23 Singapore, U.23 Guam ranks third and fourth respectively with 0 points. In the second match, the confrontation between U.23 Vietnam and U.23 Yemen (evening of September 9) is considered a decisive pivotal match. The team that wins this match will put 1 foot in the U.23 Asian Cup finals with the top position in Group C. At this time, Coach Troussier must have found his most satisfactory lineup to look forward to the important match with U.23 Yemen.
