Farmer's son, cashew sheller

Arriving at Nhan Sang Production - Trading Company Limited in Thanh An Commune, Hon Quan District, we saw the owner, Nguyen Thi Thanh Loan, always smiling and talking happily. It seemed like this woman was always busy and bustling. Ms. Loan checked the cashew products, then closed the orders through the Facebook page "Nhan Sang Binh Phuoc Cashews"; turning away, she reminded the staff to pick up the goods...

Creating famous cashew products on the market and having the foundation as it is today, is the tireless effort of Ms. Loan. Among them, there are many failures, bold experiments...

Born in 1982, Loan is the daughter of a veteran farmer in Thanh An commune, Hon Quan district, Binh Phuoc province. Having just finished 7th grade, due to family difficulties and being the eldest, Loan decided to drop out of school to earn a living, earn money to support her family and take care of her younger siblings' education.

In 1996, Ms. Loan worked for a cashew processing factory in Binh Duong province. In no time, thanks to her diligence and hard work, Ms. Loan was proficient in all stages of peeling the silk, splitting the cashew nuts...

Ms. Loan’s productivity is always higher than her friends. Therefore, the owners of the cashew factory love her and increase her salary every month. Since then, she has had a stable source of income to send back to her parents to support the family’s life in her hometown.

However, inside Loan, she always wondered: "Why can people become bosses? Why can they earn so much money? Can I do the same as them?"

From the above thought, she boldly discussed the idea with her boss, "Can I go buy raw cashew nuts and resell them to businesses?". Unexpectedly, her boss enthusiastically supported her. Moreover, he also lent Loan 30 million VND to start a business.

No sooner said than done, the woman traveled all over Phu Giao district, Binh Duong province to buy raw cashews from cashew farmers. After buying, Ms. Loan gathered them in the warehouse, sorted them, and then transported them to the warehouse of a cashew processing enterprise to sell to her boss.

At first, she had no experience in preserving raw cashews, so many of them got moldy. Many times, Ms. Loan had to throw away tons of raw cashews because they could not be sold.

Become a boss

In 2000, during a visit to her seriously ill father in her hometown - Thanh An commune, Hon Quan district; Loan decided to stay in her hometown. She saw that her hometown had a very rich source of raw cashew nuts and a large quantity. With the starting capital of 15 million VND that her mother lent her, Loan went to buy cashew nuts in Thanh An commune and neighboring communes. She brought the cashew nuts she bought back to sell to cashew splitting factories.

Next, she saw that the raw cashew nuts were being purchased in large quantities and piled up in the warehouse because they were selling too slowly. So, she immediately thought of splitting the piled-up raw cashew nuts into cashew kernels, which would bring higher value than selling raw materials; at the same time, creating jobs for local people.

Ms. Loan started buying a splitting machine, then hired dozens of workers to split the cashew nuts. Just like that, the raw cashew nuts were bought, split and sold. Thanks to that, the capital gradually increased... In 2004, Ms. Loan decided to catch a big fish - that is, with some friends in Binh Duong province, to buy raw cashew nuts to export abroad.

Unexpectedly, after exporting a few shipments, Ms. Loan unfortunately bought a batch of poor quality raw cashews, worth about 10 billion VND. The shipment was transferred to the port in Vung Tau for export abroad. However, after the inspection stages of the partner, the shipment failed and was returned... With capital stuck, and no money to turn around, Ms. Loan rushed back and forth to pay off the debt and struggled to find a way out of the difficult period.

In difficult times, wisdom emerges. To recover capital, Ms. Loan brought the returned goods, then worked hard to screen and classify them: Good seeds were processed into dried cashew nuts, cashew candy, etc. A portion was divided back to the splitting kilns. And, poor quality seeds were discarded.

In 2009, Ms. Loan released the finished product "Salted Roasted Cashews". She started to travel to promote, distribute, and sell the product "Salted Roasted Cashews" at stores, grocery stores... in districts and towns in Binh Phuoc province.

Then, go to the places where tourists often stop in Binh Phuoc. Seeing that salted roasted cashews are selling well; Ms. Loan boldly researched and made a series of different products such as: "Salt and chili roasted cashews", "Cashew cake with coin filling"...

4 cashew products achieved OCOP star

The story of the creation of purple cashew nuts is also very exciting. According to Ms. Loan: Purple cashew nuts have a dark purple color and are smaller in size than regular cashew nuts. This cashew variety is grown in tropical regions such as Africa and India and is not popular because of its low productivity.

That year, Ms. Loan bought cashew seeds to plant; unexpectedly, she bought the purple cashew seeds by mistake without knowing it. When the garden matured and began to flower, Ms. Loan visited the cashew garden and saw that it had a lot of flowers.

But each cluster only bears one tiny fruit; and the older the cashew, the blacker it becomes. When the cashew is ripe, the seeds turn dark brown. And when dried over a fire, the cashews turn dark black.

"However, when trying the black cashew nuts that look like they have been burnt, the eater will feel that they are richer and sweeter than the normal cashew varieties. I took those black cashew nuts to be tested, and the test results showed that these cashew nuts have excellent nutritional content. So I came up with the idea of creating my own exclusive "Purple Cashew Nuts" product" - Ms. Loan shared.

Purple cashew nuts have a hard shell, the purple kernel is covered with a thin shell. According to test results, purple cashew nuts are not only rich in nutrients but also contain some antioxidants and Omega-3 fatty acids, which help fight against some diseases. Unexpectedly, this unique cashew variety has helped many farmers in Thanh An commune change their lives. And, the product "Freeze-dried purple cashew nuts" created by Ms. Loan has spread everywhere.

Once, a customer from Hai Phong City called to order a few dozen boxes of "Salted Roasted Cashews" and "Freeze-dried Purple Cashews". She immediately packed and sent them. After that, there were many phone calls from the northern provinces: Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Hai Duong... calling to order. Ms. Loan was really surprised and asked questions to the customers in these provinces.

They said: In the North, many people eat vegetarian food on the first and fifteenth day of the lunar month. Eating vegetarian food, supplemented with cashew nuts produced by Ms. Loan's facility, is "delicious, crispy, fragrant, and fatty". Therefore, they order a lot. As more motivation, Ms. Loan registered to establish Nhan Sang Production - Trading Company Limited to facilitate production - business activities.

She added: "Since 2016, I created the Facebook page "Binh Phuoc Cashew Nuts" to promote the company's products and sell online."

The main markets are still the northern and central provinces. Ms. Loan identified a number of key products that suit the tastes of consumers in the northern regions, including: "Salted roasted cashews", "Cashew cake with cashew kernels", "Freeze-dried purple cashews" (cashews dried at high temperatures) and "Salted and chili roasted cashews".

From the bold direction above, Nhan Sang Company sells 500 - 800 orders to the market every day, bringing in a total revenue of about 90 million VND/day. After deducting expenses, Ms. Loan earns a profit of 7 - 30 million VND/day. Currently, Nhan Sang Company creates jobs for about 20 workers. Only the number of employees answering and receiving orders via Facebook is 5 people; the rest are packaging staff; cashew steaming staff... Each employee is paid by the company from 6 - 12 million VND/month.

Ms. Loan added: "I am determined to build the company's core products to meet OCOP standards. At the same time, I will increase online sales, combine with opening retail agents in Binh Phuoc province and introduce products at supermarkets in major cities across the country."

Mr. Nguyen Van Hau - Secretary of Thanh An Commune Party Committee - said: "The cashew products made by Nhan Sang Company are of very high quality. The products are shaping up well in the Northern and Central markets... The company creates jobs for many local workers.

On the commune side, the Party Committee and the People's Committee of the commune are very interested. Together with the district's specialized departments, we have provided legal support to build 4 key products of Nhan Sang Company into OCCOP products, recognized by the province as achieving 3 stars.

At the end of 2022, the products "Salted roasted cashews", "Freeze-dried purple cashews", "Cashews with garlic and chili flavor" and "Cashew cake" of Nhan Sang Company were recognized by the People's Committee of Binh Phuoc province as achieving 4-star OCOP.
