Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on February 14 that China and Russia maintain normal economic and trade relations, in response to suspicions that Beijing supports Moscow through oil and gas trade.

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Mr. Wang Yi affirmed: "China and Russia are two large neighboring countries with a long common border. After learning from the ups and downs of the past, the two countries have explored and established a comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination in the new era, with the characteristics of no alliance, no confrontation and no targeting of a third party."
Stressing that China and Russia maintain normal economic and trade relations, Foreign Minister Wang Yi questioned how China could fill the gap and meet the needs of its 1.4 billion people if it stopped importing oil and gas from Russia.
Regarding the Ukraine conflict, Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that China welcomes all efforts for peace, including the consensus on peace negotiations reached between the US and Russia. At the same time, he expects relevant parties to participate in the negotiation process at an appropriate time.
He said that with the war taking place on European soil, “Europe needs to play an even greater role in peace, jointly address the root causes of the crisis, find a balanced, effective and sustainable security framework, and achieve lasting peace and stability in Europe.”
