Xi said both countries have “generally weathered the storm and moved forward,” thus enhancing the interests of the two peoples and contributing to world peace, stability and prosperity, according to a January 1 statement from China’s Foreign Ministry.

Mr. Xi called the establishment of relations between China and the United States a "major event" in the history of bilateral relations and international relations.

Relations between China and the US have been strained in recent months, but the two countries have taken steps to cool things down. US officials have visited Beijing to rebuild trust in the months ahead of a summit between Xi and Biden in San Francisco in November 2023.

President Xi Jinping said the recent summit outlined the direction for the relationship between the two countries with a vision for the future.

"I am willing to work with President Biden to continue to steer and guide China-US relations for the benefit of China, the US and the two peoples, and to promote the cause of world peace and development," Xi said.

In 2024, the US will hold a presidential election in November. Former President Donald Trump - who has often been a strong critic of China - is competing with Mr. Biden for a second term.

China's Foreign Ministry said Xi also exchanged New Year messages with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, with both sides agreeing to launch a series of activities to mark the "Year of Friendship" in 2024.

China is willing to work with North Korea to enhance strategic trust, enhance exchanges and cooperation, promote deeper bilateral relations and make new contributions to maintaining regional peace and stability, Xi said.

On New Year's Eve 2023, the Chinese leader also sent a congratulatory message to Russian President Vladimir Putin. 2024 marks the 75th anniversary of China-Russia diplomatic relations.
