Medical news September 16: Free measles vaccination for children aged 1-10 years old

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health has urgently launched a measles vaccination campaign across the city for children aged 1-10. It is estimated that nearly 125,000 children need to be vaccinated during the campaign.

Deploying a large-scale free vaccination campaign

The VNVC vaccination system began providing free measles vaccinations at 39 vaccination centers across Ho Chi Minh City from September 16. Vaccinations are carried out every day of the week, including Saturdays and Sundays.

It is estimated that nearly 125,000 children need to be vaccinated during the campaign.

With the goal of accelerating measles vaccination coverage for children aged 1-10 and high-risk groups to prevent disease outbreaks, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health has urgently launched a city-wide measles vaccination campaign for children aged 1-10. It is estimated that nearly 125,000 children are in need of vaccination during the campaign.

However, as of September 10, the City has only vaccinated more than 25,000 children, equivalent to nearly 70% of children aged 1-5. Almost the entire group of children aged 6-10 have not been vaccinated; meanwhile, measles cases continue to increase, outbreaks have begun to appear in schools even though it is only the beginning of the new school year.

With the strength of the largest vaccination service center system in the City with nearly 40 centers, nearly 2,000 doctors, nurses, medical staff, and a service capacity of up to tens of thousands of injections per day, VNVC can organize hundreds of mobile vaccination teams to schools and residential areas with the highest safety vaccination process.

Therefore, the VNVC Vaccination System has sent a document to the City Department of Health wishing to participate in the campaign to vaccinate children against measles for free according to the instructions of the health sector and has received consensus.

To ensure the campaign is safe, VNVC has optimized and increased hundreds of examination tables and injection tables at each center, while mobilizing more than 1,200 doctors, nurses and 500 medical staff to participate.

From September 16, the VNVC Vaccination System began to deploy free measles vaccination at 39 vaccination centers across Ho Chi Minh City. The vaccine used in this campaign is the measles-rubella vaccine (MRVAC) produced in Vietnam, the vaccine source is from the City's budget and the Ministry of Health.

The vaccination target is all children aged 1-10 who have not received 2 doses of measles vaccine or have unknown vaccination history. People can take their children to any VNVC vaccination center in the area to get vaccinated for free.

The entire process of free vaccination for children will follow an 8-step safety procedure from registration, screening, vaccination to post-vaccination monitoring.

According to VNVC, since Ho Chi Minh City announced the measles epidemic and many localities recorded measles cases, the number of people (including adults and children) coming to get vaccinated against the disease has increased. From September 1 to September 14, in Ho Chi Minh City alone, the number of vaccinations increased by 300% compared to the same period last month.

In addition to supporting the measles vaccination campaign, VNVC also strives to provide all types of vaccines in the context of complicated epidemic developments, with floods causing many diseases such as influenza, chickenpox, diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, etc. to be at risk of outbreak.

Rejuvenation of kidney failure patients

Recently, the number of cases diagnosed with kidney failure has been increasing, and the worrying thing is that a significant proportion of these cases are young patients.

Recently, the number of cases diagnosed with kidney failure has been increasing, and the worrying thing is that a significant proportion of these cases are young patients.

The trend of kidney disease in Vietnam is developing in two very worrying directions: the number of kidney failure patients is increasing steadily in both the elderly and the young. This causes a burden on health as well as the economy.

According to doctors, currently about 6-8% of Vietnamese people are likely to have kidney problems. Most of them know they have the disease when it is already in the late stages. Many of my patients know they have kidney failure when they need emergency dialysis.

Early detection of kidney disease cannot be based on clinical signs. When a patient shows clinical signs, it means that the disease has progressed severely.

The only way to detect kidney disease early is to have a regular test once a year. Currently, this cost is around 150,000 VND.

This is a beneficial investment for health, helping to detect and treat diseases early if unfortunately infected. Normally, many people only discover that they have kidney disease when it is in the late stages, requiring dialysis. One dialysis session, the patient spends an average of 600,000 VND/session, a total of about 1.8 million VND/week. Meanwhile, the cost of screening is only about 150,000 VND/year.

In addition, doctors also recommend that people should take the following measures to prevent the risk of kidney disease: eat less salt, drink plenty of water, limit the use of stimulants such as alcohol, especially smoking, and exercise regularly every day.

Do not use any medications for a long time without consulting a doctor to prevent obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure. In addition, everyone should practice the habit of observing urine immediately after going to the toilet to prevent and detect early signs of kidney abnormalities.

If urine has an unusual color such as blood red or unusually foamy, people should go for screening immediately for early diagnosis of kidney disease. In case urine is yellow, people should drink more water to ensure kidney health.

Hospital overloaded due to dengue fever, measles

At the Central Highlands General Hospital, the number of children admitted to the departments has also increased sharply recently. Specifically, in the Department of Infectious Diseases, in the past 2 months there have always been 100 inpatients, half of whom have dengue fever. While the maximum capacity of the Department is about 170 beds, including those in the hallway.

At the General Pediatrics Department, since the beginning of September, there have been 50 cases of measles admitted to the hospital. At peak times, the Department treated 60 cases of dengue fever.

Doctors here recommend that for measles, parents should check their children's vaccination records. If they have not been vaccinated, they should get vaccinated immediately.

For dengue fever, if there are no mosquito bites, there is no dengue fever. Especially for young children, there are many ways to avoid mosquito bites because this year there are many patients and many of them are seriously ill. Therefore, avoiding mosquito bites and getting vaccinated against measles are the two best ways to avoid these two diseases.

According to statistics from the Dak Lak Provincial Department of Health, as of September 12, the province recorded more than 3,100 dengue fever patients and 115 measles cases. The disease was concentrated in September with more than 2,000 people suffering from dengue fever and more than 100 measles cases.

According to the representative of the Dak Lak Provincial Department of Health, in the coming time, these two diseases will continue to develop complicatedly, the number of cases will likely increase. This will put a lot of pressure on hospitals.

To limit the risk of disease outbreaks, the Department of Health has issued many documents and held meetings to proactively develop scenarios to deal with the disease's developments. At the same time, it has promoted a communication campaign to prevent dengue fever as well as encouraged parents to take their children to get vaccinated against measles:

The epidemic is currently under control, but it may break out in the near future. The Department of Health has also directed Buon Ma Thuot General Hospital to prepare to respond to the epidemic. If the level is normal, prepare a 30-bed isolation treatment area, if it is moderate, 60 beds, and if it is more severe, 100 beds.
