Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online at noon on February 19, Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu - Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training - said that the department is reviewing to determine the enrollment quota for public 10th graders for the 2025-2026 school year. It is expected that public high schools will enroll 70% of students who have graduated from junior high school or higher.
According to Mr. Hieu, the department will base on the conditions of facilities and teaching staff to determine the enrollment quota for public grade 10 for the 2025-2026 school year for each high school. The basis for determining the quota is based on the ability of public schools to receive students, not based on the orientation of student streaming after junior high school as in previous years.
Mr. Hieu also informed: "This year, Ho Chi Minh City is expected to increase the rate of junior high school graduates entering public grade 10. Last year, Ho Chi Minh City recruited 65% of junior high school graduates to enter public grade 10, but this year, the rate will be at least 70%.
In some areas where high schools have many places to study, the rate of junior high school graduates entering public grade 10 will be higher - depending on the number of places available at each school.
According to the Department of Education and Training, in the 2024-2025 school year, the entire city will have only 89,649 ninth graders expected to graduate from junior high school. Last year, the number was 115,759.
The 2025-2026 school year is the first year that four famous high schools in Ho Chi Minh City will stop enrolling students in specialized 10th grade. These schools are: Gia Dinh, Nguyen Thuong Hien, Mac Dinh Chi and Nguyen Huu Huan.
Mr. Lam Trieu Nghi, principal of Nguyen Thuong Hien High School, informed: "In previous years, we recruited 5 specialized classes, each class had 35 students. This year, we did not recruit specialized 10th grade classes, so the school proposed to the department to add 5 regular 10th grade classes, each class had 45 students.
The school's target for enrolling integrated 10th graders remains the same at 3 classes. If this proposal is approved by the department, next school year Nguyen Thuong Hien School will enroll 18 10th graders, an increase of 225 students in regular 10th graders compared to last year."
Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Khanh Van, principal of Gia Dinh High School, also shared: "The school would like to increase the enrollment quota for regular grade 10 from 13 to 19 classes compared to last year, equivalent to 855 students. For integrated grade 10, the school will still enroll 3 classes, equivalent to 105 students."
